When he worked for the Bush Administration he was repeatedly reffered to as a House N****r, openly by elitists like Harry Belafonte who don't give a damn about public perception, and behind closed doors by thousands of others that do. As such, he was not considered quote worthy. Now that he's most likely headed for the book tour circuit alongside Richard Clarke et al, look for the press to be fishing for his quotes far more frequently.

As to a comparison between Powell and Rice, there is little in common except the skin color. Rice has the power of conviction, is just about twice as intelligent, and is fierce in a debate. She is capable of sustaining an attack designed to trip her up by it's absurd complexity and interjections of emotion and hostility, then responding with a comprehensive, point by point verbal essay, extremely accurate on every point, whithout a break in her composure.

"Senator, you asked me a question, actually 2, and you're going to have to give me time to finish giving the answer". LOL, neither the press nor the rats know just what to do with her.

Powell, on the other hand, while an amiable and knowlegable diplomat, was not a leader. He had charisma, but lacked the conviction to present an idea as his own, making one wonder if he did in fact agree with what he was saying, or if he was merely repeating what he'd been told.

I have no doubt the man performed thousands of tasks beneficial to the Republic over the years, and it'll be sad to see him disgrace himself should he allow himself to be led by the press & the rats.

Perhaps I shall revisit it shortly.

So he was reported as being "livid." In my dictionary, one of the common definitions of livid is pallid or ashen as with illness or extreme anger. Did ol' Colin turn white?

Maybe this is why he works in the private sector now.

I think Powell will end up as one of those "complex" people in history - difficult to place.

He has managed to stay pretty damn quiet with the CIA undermining the WH for years. Now we hear from him?

I wonder if he liked when Murtha said the soldiers shouldn't have an opinion on the war - that he would speak for them.

Based on these quotes - which he knew would get broad play - we must count him as an enemy I'm afraid. He added nothing to the disucssion, but gave the President's enemies a stick to hit him with.

I'm in agreement. I don't like Condi anymore since she has been attempting to divide Israel and making a Palestinian State. She's the devil's handmaiden in this regard. I don't trust her at all.

I have same feelings regarding the Israel/Pali issue. Certainly she must depend on so called experts in State to help guide how she interfaces with the POTUS, UN, both parties involved. Now just how experienced is she in foreign policy other then her supposed claims as being an expert in Russian affairs. Which some incidentally question the validity of.
Perhaps time shall show the real Condi. I hope we are pleasantly surprised and find she is on the level. All her tough talk with Bashar Assad seems to have little effect thus far in the realities of things. But again, perhaps some of us are a bit hasty at times to see some positive results that actually make sense.

It is in fact well reported that when the Iraqi army was destroyed on the road to Bagdhad, Colin Powell picked up the phone in the oval office, pushed it at Bush elder and said "Your objectives have been met, stop the killing."

An incident which, if true, I have always had mixed feelings about.

Hey, I thought they liked Michael Moore? He sat with Jimmy Carter at the national convention. What's wrong with comparing Murtha to one of their heroes?

Colin Powell is a public servants who does an excellent job, but also spends his career worrying about his personal reputation. Sounds good but results in wimpiness sometimes as he tries to figure out which position will preserve the public's perception of his rectitude.

Colin strikes me as an intelligent man. If he pays attention to details he should be offended by Murtha smearing the entire administration and US military over Abu Grahib. Murtha ended his disjointed comments on the House resolution debate in exactly that way.

I think Colin Powel is a man with integrity, however he seems to have the problem with the world that Democrats have - they view the world they want to see it rather than reality.

sounds more like 'the arrogance of being in high office much too long, especially by feeding at the public trough--don't believe "emotion" has much to do with either one of them

Powell is sold on Powell.

The General has been in the top levels of Gubmint a bit too long.

He has his good points and not so good, but this is not about his opinion of McClellan's statement (which he mischaracterized) or about Powell himself or about McClellan or "the White House" or about Powell's friendship with or admiration for Murtha.

Powell needs to think of the TROOPS on the battlefield. And that Murtha has done nothing but harm THEM.
