An angry former Secretary of State Colin Powell is blasting the Bush White House for attacking Rep. Jack Murtha, who undermined troop morale and encouraged al Qaida last week with his call for an immediate U.S. pullout from Iraq.
"To attack him the way he was attacked, accusing him of being a Michael Moore, was disgraceful and was not worthy," a Powell told the New York Post's Deborah Orin, who described him as "livid."
"Jack Murtha is great friend of mine," Powell declared. "He's a great patriot.
"I don't agree with his position," the former top Bush diplomat said. "But he has started a debate which is a good debate to have as to how long we should be there."
Hours after Murtha called for an immediate pullout last Thursday, White House press secretary Scott McClellan compared him to Michael Moore. Two days later, however, both President Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney went out of their way to describe Murtha as "honorable."
Still, Powell focused instead on the earlier remark, and said nothing about the olive branch offered by Bush and Cheney.
The one-time chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff also suggested that the war on terror wasn't quite as serious as other challenges the U.S. has faced.
"We're not facing a world war anymore," Powell told the Post. "We have pretty much convinced the world that democracy is a better system than communism or fascism or totalitarianism."
that's a good question..
but I think that maybe too high as well...
Generally the 4 star level doesn't have even 300....
I don't think he had been a 4 star for long when he got to the JCS though.....
I agree. I blame state for the failure to get Turkey aboard. I blame Powell for using the doves in State for his own purposes. Perfect example of a helf-hearted subordinate. Unable to get in way in council, he drags his heels, hoping to get the results he wanted. I also think that he had Bush go to the UN knowing pretty much what the outcome would be in the end. Either he was duped by the French or he just let them serve his purposes. I believe the latter.
Interesting analysis of the man. Perhaps that is what it comes down to.
Murtha was and is singing Michael Moore's tune. It was correct for the White House to point that out. Moore and Murtha are both beneath comtempt. Murtha hasn't treated our Marines and soldiers honorably in this matter. Therefore he deserves no honor.
Colin Powell is auditioning for a job in a Hillary Clinton White House. Keeping all his options open
He's right that the Michael Moore quote was out of line.
But since Bush and Cheney themselves haven't said anything like that, Powell should have shut up.
I see your point...taking a liberal slant will certainly get him more money at colleges, thanks for that angle.
Murtha undermined the morale of our Marines and soldiers and buoyed up the spirits of the terrorists who kill them. How in the world can you call that honorable conduct???
The Michael Moore comment was dead on.
Should we pull out of Iraq?
If you consider that there have been an average of 160,000 troops in the Iraq theater of operations during the last 22 months, and a total of 2112 deaths, that gives a firearm death rate of 60 per 100,000.
The rate in Washington D.C. is 80.6 per 100,000. That means that you are about 25% more likely to be shot and killed in our Nation's Capitol, which has some of the strictest gun control laws in the nation, than you are in Iraq.
Conclusion: We should immediately pull out of Washington.

I agree. Once the last boot leaves the ground, look for bloody, factional infighting that will result in chaos.
Washington will become an intractable quagmire with no chance for peace in sight.
If the door was open a crack for a possible Presidential run someday, Powell has certainly welded it shut forever. What a simple putz. If Powell's not smart enough to figure out what the rats' overall political strategy was in their relentless, obnoxious attack on the White House, and how ingenious the Republicans' long-overdue response was, then he's not fit to command the Cub Scouts, let alone the U.S. military.

Former Secretrary of State COLIN POWELL is not alone in his attacks on the BUSH White House. His former Speech Writer JOE GALLOWAY has more to say in some of his latest Knight-Ridder columns:

Interesting Iraq War synopsis here from other Knight-Ridder columnists, particularly at the ending:

Don't they make a testosterone patch for that?
ROTFLOL
I love you Fred!
No disrespect to Mrs. Nerks! ;o)
Yahhh!!!
Every comment every conservative makes about any liberal is automatically right!
Every comparison any conservative makes to any liberal is automatically fair and valid!
:sarcasm:
I'd like to think we are better then liberals in this regard. But people like you make me doubt it
I think you will be proven right one day.
Not just colleges, he also does business seminars, meetings, and other events where he speaks for a fee, not to mention he gets to prove how independent he is when he is on a board of directors which earns him more money.
He is a "type A" speaker which is top line on the speaking circuit, reserved for certain folks.
