Whitehaven, TN - Three teenagers, and the father of two of them are out of jail tonight, after they admitted roughing up a DeSoto County Sheriff's Deputy. That, every body agrees on. But how it came about... and where... is the subject of lots of talk and plenty of debate.
"He pulled his pistol twice on me." Ricky Brown still can't make sense of what happened, but he knows it brought dozens of officers from two states to his doorstep.
He says he and his sons were sitting at home Tuesday night, when a man walked into his home claiming to be a law officer. "He barged straight in. I didn't know who he was, so I asked him to step back outside and talk. He pushed me." said Brown, who lives on Millbranch, 7 houses up from the state line.
What happened here remains in dispute, but one thing's for sure. DeSoto County sheriff's deputy Daniel Grisham ended up with a dislocated shoulder.
"Me and my youngest son grabbed him and throwed him out of our house." admitted Brown, who says it wasn't immediately clear the man was a law officer at all.
He, his sons, and the girlfriend of one of them all ended up in jail, he in Memphis the others in Hernando.
Pehaps the biggest question is what a DeSoto Deputy was doing a quarter mile into Tennessee without any backup.
His bosses say he was there to question Dustin Green, a suspect in a stolen property case.
"He was NOT there to arrest him, he was there to talk to him." said Commander Mark Blackson who adds, technically, the officer did nothing wrong. Officers cross state lines to question suspects all the time, he says, but he'd have been better off with another officer. "Yes sir, officers safety, we always recommend they take 2 people with them."
Blackson says a statement from a teenager arrested in the case, backs up the officer's story
But the boy's father says the whole thing was just plain wrong.
"I was violated in my own home. Mississippi did not , they could have come and properly represented theirselves." said Brown.
Everybody was released from jail in Memphis and Hernando Wednesday with no charges filed... yet.
But get this: Because the incident happened in Tennessee, Mr. Brown and his son could only be charged with simple assault. If it had happened it Mississippi it would have been aggrivated assault on a police officer... and a felony. Mr. Brown says he also may have a case against the Sheriff and Detective Grisham too.
How green was this cop?
If a cop from another state barged into my house, he would have a problem.
Under the apparent circumstances, it seems he should have knocked at the door, identified himself, and asked to see the party to question, all while standing outside the home. Something seems wrong with this story.

And armed. Isn't that considered a 'home invasion'?

Way too many police departments cover for these type guys instead of firing them stat!
It is simply illegal for a cop or anyone else to enter a house without a) identifying himself; and b) receiving permission to enter or having a warrant to enter. This cop broke all the rules and should be fired for incompetence.

At a minimum this is a burglary...at least in my neck of the woods.
I am curious as to why someone that lives in Michagan would pick up a story like this in Tennessee???
If ANYONE barges into my house unannounced, they will have NO more problems on Earth.... they'll be promptly sent on to the next life.
Assuming the father's story is exactly true. The officer's story might be that he identified himself, stated his business, was invited inside, and was roughed up.
In all these types of stories there is a one sentence addition about the homeowners' legal action. If it were me I'd have filed a lawsuit yesterday.
Maybe because nobody from Tennessee posted it?
Also it's a good story to show how cops have become so arrogant and out-of-control.
