Crash reports hit Xbox 360

Microsoft on Wednesday said some Xbox 360 owners are reporting problems with the new video game console that debuted in North America earlier this week. "We have received a few isolated reports of consoles not working as expected," Microsoft spokeswoman Molly O'Donnell told Reuters in a telephone interview.

Enthusiast Web sites such as Engadget.com and Xbox-scene.com, as well as Microsoft's own Xbox Web forum, carried postings on Wednesday from Xbox 360 owners reporting that some systems had crashed during regular play as well as during online game play using the Xbox Live service.

Roundup Xbox 360 grab-a-thon Devotees line up as the console launches in the rain and in the desert.Problems included screens going black and the appearance of a variety of error messages.

"So, the Xbox 360's been available for, what, 15 minutes, and already the crash reports are streaming in," a poster on Engadget said. The sites did not say how widespread the problem was.

The machine is the first of a new generation of consoles offering high-definition graphics and has been snatched up by game enthusiasts since its launch on Tuesday.

O'Donnell, who declined to say how many reports the company had received, said calls represent a "very, very small fraction" of units sold. The number of calls was not unexpected, she said.

"With any launch of this magnitude, you're bound to see something happening," she said.

O'Donnell said the best way to resolve the issues is to call 1-800-4MY-XBOX for trouble shooting. If that does not solve the problem, she said, Microsoft will repair or replace the unit.

My kids have been playing it, and it's fine so far. They really like the graphics.

Some people have reported that if you increase the airflow around or over the power brick that the problem goes away. Either put a fan blowing on it, or balance it over the top of an open box so there is airflow all around it.

This is why I don't play video games or watch TV. There just ain't THAT much fun to be worth the hassle.

MS makes crap folks want to buy. My son was at the launch in the desert and managed to get two of the things for $850. Turned around and sold them both on Ebay for $2,500 on Wednesday.

Capitalism is wonderful.

The problem is the more sophisticated and interactive something is, the more the public can screw it up.

It's only cost feasible to test for x amount of bugs, for y amount of months with z amount of employees.

At some point you have to introduce the product to market, and then quell the ineveitble tide of bugs that you never thought of having to reproduce.

I've owned a number of MSFT products over the past 20 years. I've never had the problems that some people claim that they've had.

But then, I'm not the type to go dinking around with things much anyway. Pretty much I use the stuff as designed. I configure things to my convenience but I don't tweak the hell out of the stuff.

The people who tend to have the most problems are the ones who tweak the hell out of their stuff.

Not saying MSFT can't do a better job on some products. Just saying that the "average" user doesn't experience the same problems that a "knowledgable" user experiences.

Not design, sell, then work on the bugs.

Then, when the bugs are worked out, stop selling it and supporting it so you can release a new buggy system that you can practice debugging and start the cycle all over again.

balance it over the top of an open box so there is airflow all around it.

That box will be incorporated into release 2, but expect a major price increase.

Never ever be the first to by anything made by MS. They seem to always release it when it's still pretty much a late stage Beta....

My next PC will either be a Mac or running Linux.

Wait for the availability of the Intel Macs. Soon, very soon. I hear that the performance will blow you away. Lithe OS, too.

Or rather than wasting your time and rotting your mind, you could spend the same money at the book store.

Hee-hee! Tiptoeing quietly away now from the gamer flamers...
