Crash reports hit Xbox 360
CNET ^ | 11/24/2005 | Reuters

Microsoft on Wednesday said some Xbox 360 owners are reporting problems with the new video game console that debuted in North America earlier this week. "We have received a few isolated reports of consoles not working as expected," Microsoft spokeswoman Molly O'Donnell told Reuters in a telephone interview.

Enthusiast Web sites such as Engadget.com and Xbox-scene.com, as well as Microsoft's own Xbox Web forum, carried postings on Wednesday from Xbox 360 owners reporting that some systems had crashed during regular play as well as during online game play using the Xbox Live service.

Roundup Xbox 360 grab-a-thon Devotees line up as the console launches in the rain and in the desert.Problems included screens going black and the appearance of a variety of error messages.

"So, the Xbox 360's been available for, what, 15 minutes, and already the crash reports are streaming in," a poster on Engadget said. The sites did not say how widespread the problem was.

The machine is the first of a new generation of consoles offering high-definition graphics and has been snatched up by game enthusiasts since its launch on Tuesday.

O'Donnell, who declined to say how many reports the company had received, said calls represent a "very, very small fraction" of units sold. The number of calls was not unexpected, she said.

"With any launch of this magnitude, you're bound to see something happening," she said.

O'Donnell said the best way to resolve the issues is to call 1-800-4MY-XBOX for trouble shooting. If that does not solve the problem, she said, Microsoft will repair or replace the unit.

I've been playing mine a lot and it seems to be holding up, though there has been a few unnerving loading pauses in Ridge Racer 6 that weren't there for the first day =/

I'm SOOOOOOOOO sick of crashing windows that there is NO WAY I'd buy anymore of thier products. My next PC will either be a Mac or running Linux.

The practice of selling products like Microsoft sells, and relying on customer feedback and bug reports to work out the glitches should be illegal.

Design it, Debug it and make it reliable, then market and sell it. Not design, sell, then work on the bugs.

I worked for a major corporation for 20+ years that could not get enough MS products. we tested all their products because our management thought MS was better than sliced bread. we had to shove our crap as "production" then cathc the shit when all of them broke.

Yet to figure out how MS stays in business

You're kidding, right? A company that virtually revolutionized our society, and made a few million stockholders a few zillion dollars.

Unless you're Steve Jobs, I'll guess you're kidding...

Being just a bit harsh here aren't we? My 360 has been running almost non-stop since 1:00 am Tuesday, running three different games and with 4 teenage boys to abuse it.

No problems at all to report here and from my own reading online, the true number of problem boxes out there is extremely small given the number of boxes put into production in this short time period.

Ease up on MS a bit and save your ammo for when they truly screw something up.

Microsoft makes utter crap and rushes it to market under a hail of sycophantic media coverage?

Are we talking about the Xbox or the Windows operating system here? Nyack.

My 360 has been running almost non-stop since 1:00 am Tuesday, running three different games and with 4 teenage boys to abuse it.

The info I've read seems to indicate two problems:

1) The box runs very hot.

2) The DVD drive is very noisy.

Is that the case on your system?

They said the same thing about 95, that there were a few "isolated" reports of malfunctions. Then they had to make two new version of it an finally went to 98 which was F***ked also and 98se which was better, to XP which is so full of holes that it is so pathetic that I went back to 98SE. MS always makes crap but they know how to market and that gets them by!
