N.M. Gov Admits He Wasn't Baseball Pick

Gov. Bill Richardson is coming clean on his draft record — the baseball draft, that is, admitting that his claim to have been a pick of the Kansas City A's in 1966 was untrue.

For nearly four decades, Richardson, often mentioned as a possible Democratic presidential candidate, has maintained he was drafted by the Kansas City Athletics.

The claim was included in a brief biography released when Richardson successfully ran for Congress in 1982. A White House news release in 1997 mentioned it when he was about to be named U.S. ambassador to the United Nations. And several news organizations, including The Associated Press, have reported it as fact over the years.

But an investigation by the Albuquerque Journal found no record of Richardson being drafted by the A's, who have since moved to Oakland, or any other team.

Informed by the newspaper of its findings, the governor acknowledged the error in a story in Thursday's editions.

"After being notified of the situation and after researching the matter ... I came to the conclusion that I was not drafted by the A's," he said.

Richardson spokesman Gilbert Gallegos declined to comment when reached by the AP on Thursday.

Richardson, a right-handed pitcher who played at Tufts University, said he was actively scouted by several major league teams in the 1960s.

He insisted his name appeared on "a draft list of some kind" created by the Los Angeles Dodgers and Pittsburgh Pirates. He named team scouts, whom he said told him that he "would or could" be drafted. The scouts have since died.

Richardson later developed arm trouble, eliminating any possible pro career.

Sigh. I just realized that I was not picked by Notre Dame to be their quarterback the season they won the national title, the same year I tragically lost both legs while saving a little old lady and and small baby from being run over by a rogue freight train, which I recall stopping by leaping into the cab, losing my legs (or was it arms?) by beating back the terrorist who had caused the train to escape the tracks. There, now I feel better.

I have never embroidered or enlarged upon this simple tale. I just told it the way I remembered it.

He is doing his "wash" today to ensure his closets are clean in preparation for making a run for the dimocRAT nomination for President. I've heard some republicans speak favorably of Richardson. I guess he'd best watch his six since Hilary's opposition research will smite him.

He probably did get drafted by Kansas City in 1968- the only problem is they didn't have a team- they moved to Oakland and KC was without a team (except for Richardson) until 1969.

"I was drafted by the Kansas City A's in 1966. Yeah, that's the ticket. Yeah.

Then I went to Vietnam, and I was injured catching a mortar shell in my teeth. And they made me a three-star general! And then I got a job in journalism, writing for the National Enquire.. er, Geographic! Yeah.. I was making twenty thousand a ye.. month! In fact, I won the Pulitzer Prize that year! Yeah, that's the ticket.

And then my cousin died - Joe Louis - and I took it hard. Maybe too hard - I tried to kill myself. Yeahh.. I did kill myself! Sure! I was medically dead for a week and a half! It was a woman that brought me out of it - Indira Gandhi! Yeah, right.. And she told me about Pathological Liars Anonymous. Oh, you'd be surprised how many famous people belong.

In fact.. at one of the meetings I met my wife - Morgan Fairchild! Who I've seen naked. Yes, I'm a changed man now, and all because of Pathological Liars Anonymous. Why, I - I even have my picture on the cover of Newsweek magazine. Yeah. Every day! Yeah.. that's the ticket! Yeah, you betcha!

Is he still pimping for Clinton?

Apparently not.

He is planning to run for President in 2008.

How do you figure this came out?

Pretty bizzare.

I worked for a guy who actually was drafted (in the 1980s) by the Padres. His first time pitching he threw out his arm, had to have reconstructive surgery and never played a major league game again.

He ended up running a pizza business down the drain, and got caught up with Amway.

I always thought he would make a great politician. Too bad he tends to embellish the truth a little too.

It's funny though, I can google him, and ESPN has his stats for the game he pitched.

Once again, Hillary's FBI files come in handy. Cross another one off the list

She didn't need an FBI file, she knows him personally.

She also has ambition and knows he is running in 2008.

It might be payback for the stuff he has been saying about her in his fundraisers for re-election for governor.

After further investigation, I just learned that I indeed was never drafted to play center for the LA Lakers.

This should guarantee at least three liars (H. Clinton, Biden and Richardson) in the 2008 Democratic primary.
