Seasonal smells of success

American homes today will waft with more than the aroma of turkey and pumpkin pie. Also in the air will be the joy at the start of the holiday season from Thanksgiving to Christmas through New Years. As temperatures turn cold outdoors, we'll warm ourselves inside and out with gatherings of friends and family, festivities, parties and presents.

Inevitably, this season also gives rise to queries about the "true meaning" of this or that holiday, usually with complaints about the season's superficiality. To these critics, I say, "Stop being an ugly hair in the sweet potato casserole."

I'm thankful for the fact that I can play all my Christmas music (all 1700 songs) for the family over my iPod, which I have connected to the home stereo. No more shuffling through several hundred Christmas CDs, tapes and albums trying to find a particular song.

I can also choose not to play certain "irritating" Christmas albums like "Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer" and anything by Bob Rivers. I can just not put them on my iPod and pretend I don't have them. In the old day, people would go through my Christmas compilation albums and say "I want to hear this" and "I want to hear that". Now they can only choose from among songs that are not annoying to me.
