A Lost Art
Let the peace of God rule in your hearts, . . . and be thankful. Colossians 3:15
|
The apostle Paul had never been to the church in Colosse, but he had heard all about it from Epaphras. He knew it was a church under attack by false teachers, so he prayed fervently for this congregation (Colossians 1:9-14; 2:4-7).
Among his requests, Paul asked that they would give joyful thanks to the Father because He had rescued them, moving them from the kingdom of darkness to the kingdom of His Son (1:12-13). We too need to be thankful for what Christ has done for us.
Thankfulness seems to be a lost art today. Warren Wiersbe illustrated this problem in his commentary on Colossians. He told about a ministerial student in Evanston, Illinois, who was part of a life-saving squad. In 1860, a ship went aground on the shore of Lake Michigan near Evanston, and Edward Spencer waded again and again into the frigid waters to rescue 17 passengers. In the process, his health was permanently damaged. Some years later at his funeral, it was noted that not one of the people he rescued ever thanked him.
Let's take time often to recall how God has rescued us from eternal death and has given us eternal life through His Son. Let's make certain that we never allow thanking the Father to become a lost art. Dave Egner
Give me a spirit of thankfulness, Lord,
For numberless blessings given;
Blessings that daily come to me
Like dewdrops falling from heaven. Dawe
With practice, anyone can master the art of thankfulness.

It is hard not to have your eyes mist over when you really think about all the things that we have to be thankful for in this country.
At the top of the list is that God sent his Son to die for us that we might be reconciled to Him.
This year, more than ever in the midst of our troubles and sometimes self pity we need to be thankful for our soldiers fighting for us as there are those that are willing to throw them on a refuse pile if it will advance their political purposes,we must never let that happen again.
A happy and safe Thanksgiving to all.

Greetings,
Fort Jackson has designated 19 December - 2 Jan as a time of "Block Leave." During this time soldiers in training are allowed to go home for the holidays. Some soldiers choose not to go home for a variety of reason.
The Commanding General of Fort Jackson has asked me to see if churches in the local area are willing to adopt a soldier for a day. Basically it would involve picking up a soldier on post and taking him to their family or church event and returning them to their unit afterwards.
It could be to a service, to a movie, bowling, shopping, a meal or some other planned event sometime during the Block Leave period.
If you know of any individual or group willing to host a soldier(s) during this period of time, we'd love to talk with them. Please feel free to call or email me with any offers or questions.
Sincerely,
Roger Heath
