Harley Announces Recall of 13,400 Bikes

MILWAUKEE (AP) -- Harley-Davidson Inc. issued a voluntary safety recall on 2006 model Dyna series motorcycles built between June 9 and Oct. 19 due to a transmission defect.

The company said late Tuesday the recall affects some 13,400 motorcycles and is expected to cost less than $5 million, which it will make reservations for in the fourth quarter.

Harley-Davidson also said it expects to meet its previously announced wholesale shipment target of 329,000 motorcycles for 2005.

The Milwaukee-based company said it will provide owners with free pickup and delivery and will make recall kits, which include three redesigned transmission components, available at dealerships starting the week of Dec. 12.

The defect may allow the motorcycles to go into a false neutral position even though the neutral indicator light is illuminated, it said.

"If that happens, the transmission could engage into first or second gear unexpectedly," Harley-Davidson spokesman Bob Klein said Wednesday.

Two accidents related to the problem were reported, but none resulted in injury, Klein said.

The defect resulted from a design flaw in the six-speed transmission, which replaced the five-speed on the Dyna to make for a smoother ride at highway speeds and increase fuel efficiency, Klein said.

The redesign also resulted in a change to the front forks, chassis and a wider rear tire.

Shipments of the 2006 Dyna had been delayed but resumed after a change to production, he said.

Harley-Davidson shares rose $1.20, or 2.2 percent, to $55.67 in Wednesday afternoon trading on the New York Stock Exchange, amid a general gain in market prices on optimism over consumer spending this holiday season.

The dark I rode was a 900(I think). It's been about a year and a half. The guy had it sitting in a garage for a couple of years and couldn't get it started. We pulled the motor and put all new gaskets etc in it, cleaned the carbs(mikunis), and then just tuned the snot out of it. I kept it long enough to burn 3tanks of gas through to make sure it was running well. It was by far the best handling bike I have ever ridden. Any of these guys who want to talk about race bikes are in for a rude suprise when the naked bikes out handle and perform them all day long.

The reason is that the yamaha is adopting a "me too" style not a "better than".

I think it is just fitting into giving a "harley"-esque ride for a lower price.

No matter how good the mechanics it is still not a Harley as far as marketing is concerned. (akin to a Rolls-Royce no matter how bad the electric or lack of cup holders was still a Rolls Royce.)

We should all be thankfull that our biggest motorcycle crisis in this country is over name brand plates and not as the ONLY means of transportation in some third world country.

One reason I went for this one because it had fuel injection. I live at 7500' and have had some hideous experiences with carbs on bikes under 1000cc.

I'd like to think there's no uncool bikes, just uncool bikers.

Boss Hoss's are so heavy that their quarter-mile times are pathetic. All they can do with all that power is light up their rear tire. A Boss Hoss is a great big piece of ridable jewelry, a toy, not a motorcycle.

And heat is not a problem for modern bikes, because they have that oh-so-new innovation, liquid cooling (it's only been around for 100 years or so). A new GSXR1000, straight off the showroom floor, will produce 150 RWHP from 999 cc. And that's EPA approved for emissions and sound. The reason they rev so high is because they can, and because you get high performance by getting a lot out of small package. There may be "no replacement for displacement", but you can take that too far, too.

Your comparisons with narrow-focus custom bikes with oversized engines (which, again, most riders would not want to live with day to day) are not even apples and oranges, more like apples and watermelons.

The reason I say this is HD makes a lot more money of their mechandise then off their bike sales.

**WTF is that sentence supposed to mean? **

Uh that it dosn't matter how fast your motor is spinning(which is rpm's) it matters on how fast your bike is moving which is mph. We could go a step further and talk about how quickley they get up to that speed but I am afraid it might be too much for ya. You do realize that your rpm gauge isn't a speedo right? *snickers*

**So you're putting down 130 ft-lbs at 3000 rpm. That's 71 HP. Respectable, to be sure. How long could you keep riding the bike wide open, I wonder, before it seized from overheating? What's the redline? How bad is the vibration on this big paint-shaker of yours? **

Well first of all if I am putting down that kind torque as opposed to hp then I am most likely riding a diesel. Also 3000 rpms isnt wide open not even close the redline is about 6500. Not much vibration since I have a machine shop do all my porting, polishing and balancing for me. It's not a paintshake it's a ground pounder.

**And still none of these bikes could beat a decent 600 race replica in a drag race.**

I truly hope you are kidding with this statement if not then you we really don't have much to talk about until you learn a little bit more about the subject.

**And as far as outfits like Big Dog goes, if they were producing anything other than the currently politically popular big American cruisers, I doubt if they'd ever get them past EPA regs.**

All their models are now built to pass the 2006 epa regs so here is something else you might want to read up on.

"I have lots of people come in on the Metric Cruisers and the number one request is "Make it sound like a Harley". "

Who cares about metrics. I don't want a Harley and I don't want a Japanese imitation of one. Now lets see Harley beat the Japanese at their game, in any other class of bikes. I don't think they could, even if they wanted to.

You are absolutely correct on the no uncool bikes but uncool bikers part.

I have a couple of guys who come in from Colorado every year and I have to rejet their carbs while they are here so they don't barf all over the place when they give it a twist.

Go put your front wheel up against a wall and do a burnout to impress some wrinkly chicks with saggy boobs. Maybe it'll make you feel better. Moron.

Selling over 300,000 bikes at prices well north of 12 grand apiece, I don't think so.

But they do make a lot of money on Harley-branded products, accessories and parts. I'm sure Honda would too, if they could. Or Ducati or any of the others.

I'm proud to own TWO Harleys. I wouldn't own anything else. By the way, as my screen name indicates, I'm not a democrat.

Consider the implications of that.

A company that sells a product that is so desired that mere mention of it on articles of clothing or "dust collectors" causes people to buy the article of clothing or "dust collector".

People who want the $20,000.00 motorcycle are at least able to buy a $20.00 shirt.

As far as Capitalism is concerned, its a wonderful thing.

You are hopeless. YOu guys were the ones who tried having this argument and now you are saying they are apples and oranges. BWAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Liquid cooling has only been around since the late 80's and early 90's for the jap bike market. The gsxr will only do that at unbelievable high rpms and only do it for a short time. It's torque is much much lower so we are back to bragging about hp with no substance.

Please read up a little bit on the internal combustion motor(this is what these motors are, just in case) and then when you actually know what you are speaking about come back and correct me. Until then you are just wasting bandwidth. I know a lot of people who are riding 100+ ci motors everyday and just in case you didn't know Harley is also offering one. It seems you are lost when it comes to this discussion.

"Also 3000 rpms isnt wide open not even close the redline is about 6500."

By definition if 3000 rpm is your torque peak then that is with the throttle wide open. I've never seen a dyno run done with partial throttle, at least not for purpose of measuring HP and Torque peak numbers.

"I truly hope you are kidding with this statement if not then you we really don't have much to talk about until you learn a little bit more about the subject. "

OK, some might (might!) be able to beat a 600 supersport in a drag race. None of them could touch a 1000 supersport in a drag race, certainly.

About 90 percent of the bikes on the road here in AZ are Harleys or some jap bike trying to look like one as well as sound like one.
