If an employer wants to gain the economic benefits when hiring illegals, it must accept the economic downsides, too. This is one of them.

I bet his insurance company isn't too happy. Maybe after he starts paying high premium for the so called cheap labor they will quit hiring illegals. California just had case ruling where they are entitled to work comp benefits.

Maybe I missed something, but the article didn't say he was permamnently disabled, it said he was seriously injured. Since when does a "serious injury" qualify one for worker's compensation for life; ESPECIALLY a 17 year-old illegal?

I'd be interested to know a few more facts--if this illegal had been a legal employee--would he have been covered by WComp insurance? Would the construction company be covered with legal insured employees?

In other words, does an employer risk wider liability hiring an illegal over a legal?

At $240 a week it shouldn't take him long at all to buy a ticket back to Mexico.

Kinda hard to feel much sympathy for anybody in this story. (aside from us taxpayers who will ultimately pay for it)

I'd like to know the name of this judge. Interesting how it was omitted from the article, as well as the name of the fancy subdivision and the builder hiring illegals. The Alabama Home Builders' workman's comp program is a self-insured fund of which I'm a member. I guarantee they'll appeal.

I am against illegal inmigration 100%. Having said that, the boy was injured at work and the employer should pay. After everything is settled, they need to ship the boy back to his country.

As strongly opposed to illegal immigration as I am, I do not see why someone who is doing a job should not get the protection of workers comp for that job.

It seems that there are many people in this country (I don't mean anybody here) who truly wish to have some sort of underclass of workers, a serf class, a helot class. What do his employers think should happen to this guy now? He should just drop dead because he got hurt on their job? This attitude disgusts me.

May this employer be blessed with 500 more
illegals receiving money for the employer's
foolishness and greed.

The greed card doesn't play well if this holds.
The illegals will talk about this amongst themselves
and employers will see many more secure the same.
Some of these illegals are born criminals, you can
bet they will take advantage of the situation.

By the time news of this ruling crosses the Rio Grande...
there won't be a home builder left in Mexico and points south.

Henry Lambert Construction will become bankrupt, cease to operate, and another builder - H.L. Builders will emerge from the arseheap.
