Swedish girls design anti-rape belt A group of Swedish teenage girls has designed a belt that requires two hands to remove and which they hope will deter would-be rapists, one of the creators told AFP on Tuesday.
"It's like a reverse chastity belt," one of the creators, 19-year-old Nadja Björk, told AFP, meaning that the wearer is in control, instead of being controlled.
The military-style buckle has a latch that the wearer has to move through a labyrinth into the correct position in order to unlock the belt.
"You need two hands to open it, so the rapist can't hold you down and open it at the same time. It takes a while to figure it out if you don't know what you're doing," she said.
The product was designed as part of a high school project in entrepreneurship and the girls have already sold 300 of the belts in Sweden, priced at 150 kronor.
Björk and one of her partners now plan to start a business to mass produce the belts and are currently in negotiations with potential partners.
"But I'm not doing this for the money," she said. "I'm really passionate about stopping rape. I think it's terrible."
The Swedish media have in recent months given wide and descriptive coverage to rape attacks, though experts' opinions vary on whether there has been an actual rise in the number of such crimes.

I guess it'll work as long as no one grabs you by the hair with one hand, puts a knife to your throat with the other, and says "Take it off." I mean, it's a good idea, but I still think a big gun would be better.
If rape is that prevalent in your area that you need a belt, it's time to move.
It says a lot of the Swedish socialist ideal that they've got 19 year old girls so afraid of rape they're getting innovaive with technology to stop it.

Malmo seemed like a sleepy civilized town, but then that was 10 years or so ago. Surprising that it has a rape problem or any other problem.
Shameful that such a product is needed.

A rapist wouldn't really have much of a problem delivering a solid knock on the head - short of lethal but hard enough to give him a few minutes to work the jigsaw puzzle.
Pacifist nurses here in Bama who work in some of the grittier areas will often carry a vial of deer urine in one hand when they walk to their cars.
Its dramatically overpowering, umm, aroma when the vial is dropped acts as a reverse viagra (all deer hunters know this already).
Not every Bama girl packs heat, after all, so they have to come up with substitutes if they are still going to fulfill their personal obligation to help everyone in need (without being helpless themselves).
