CAMDEN, N.J., Nov. 21 (UPI) -- City officials in Camden, N.J., are taking the offensive against a Kansas statistical firm that ranks Camden as the most dangerous city in the United States.
Monday, the Morgan Quitno firm released its annual ranking of dangerous cities based on six types of crime, and for the second year, Camden was first in the country among 354 cities.
The study analyzed the occurrence rates of murder, rape, aggravated assault, robbery, burglary and motor vehicle theft.
However, local officials told the Camden Courier-Post the latest rankings use figures from 2004, and overlook improvements made in 2005.
"Last year is old news. The ranking is not an appropriate measure of where we stand today," said Camden County Prosecutor Vincent Sarubbi.
Camden Chief Operating Officer Randy Primas said the Marriott hotel chain backed out of plans to build a hotel downtown after last year's ranking was announced.
Camden, I can't spell. LOL
"The ranking is not an appropriate measure of where we stand today,"
They're right.
It's probably WORSE!
New Jersey and you . . .
Camden is boasting that their murder rate has significantly reduced over the past year, by as much as 40%. Wow! Previously there was, on average, one murder per week. Somehow, though, I would feel strange boasting that the city now has only one murder every other week.
Strangely, Camden and Newark are two of the poorest cities in the nation, while Hunterdon, Sussex, and Monmouth counties (all in NJ) are among the wealthiest counties in the nation.
NJ must be getting to be more and more of a toilet. Sorry. ;) But with McGreevey, then Corzine as governors, and LOUSE-enberg getting re-elected to the US Senate, it's obvious a majority of people who vote there are morons.
Yup. Ever notice which political party usually governs these crappy cities? Heck, even Fallujah is safer than Camden.
You're right.....the area surrounding the Camden tourist area (opposite Philadelphia) is one of the filthiest tourist areas I have ever seen in America.
I've been to Oakland, Cincinnati, S.E. Washington D.C., the Bronx, Atlanta, Miami, North Philadelphia, and several other hell holes, and Camden is by far the worst place I've ever been. Tijuana is nicer than Camden. If there's a worse city than Camden, I don't want to know about it.
Owl_Eagle(If what I just wrote makes you sad or angry,
I'm wondering if there is any truth to the red/blue thing... Inquiring minds want to know.
I would LOVE to see that thug mayor of Newark defeated in the primary next year by Cory Booker, the guy whose campaign was chronicled by PBS. The Demo machine used what we might call "gestapo tactics" to stop Booker and it was downright criminal. I suspect voters there aren't wise enough to throw out the incumbent though. Then they wonder why their city remains such a sewer.
"I've been to Oakland, Cincinnati, S.E. Washington D.C., the Bronx...."
You've been everywhere man, you've been everywhere... (Sung in the voice of Johhny Cash). :)
Camden and Newark are not all of New Jersey. There are many great areas of New Jersey that are holding out from the influence of the corruption in Trenton. This is why many in the NYC area are moving to these pockets of decency...
Well, Isn't that special?.(Lily Tomlin as Ernestine doing the Church Lady)..
Many people (not me) expect a Hillary Clinton - Rudy Giuliani matchup. Well, here's an interesting tidbit for the 2008 election:
New York City is the 4th safest city in America.
Little Rock is among the 20 most dangerous metropolitan areas (#14).
In fact, FOUR Arkansas areas are. The other three are Pine Bluff (#11), Hot Springs (#9), and West Memphis (Memphis Metropolitan Area, #3).

St Louis is number 3! Woo-Hoo! I'd better start locking my door at night!
Jersey city has undergone a fairly amazing revitalization.
My city is # 1 but I still lock my doors at night.
I can't imagine what I'd do if I lived in Camden.
