At least one Arab television media outlet reported that Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, the head of the al-Qaida in Iraq, was killed in Iraq on Sunday afternoon when eight terrorists blew themselves up in the in the northern Iraqi city of Mosul.

The unconfirmed report claimed that the explosions occurred after coalition forces surrounded the house in which al-Zarqawi was hiding.

WASHINGTON, Nov 20 (Reuters) - U.S. authorities are looking into whether al Qaeda in Iraq leader Abu Musab al-Zarqawi was killed in a gunfight in the northern Iraqi city of Mosul, a U.S. official said on Sunday, but a White House spokesman said that was "highly unlikely."

In Washington, a U.S. counterterrorism official said the identities of the suspected al-Qaida members was unknown. Asked if they could include terror leader Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, the official replied: "There are efforts under way to determine if he was killed.

The official said spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the information.

Yes, yes; my thought was intended to include such activity with use of "surround the place".

Al-Mada paper said that terrorists hiding in a house fired back at American and Iraqi troops that were surrounding the house in a battle that lasted from dawn to noon on Saturday (Jerusalem Post said it was Sunday)`after receiving intelligence about a meeting for senior al-Qaeda members.

IF this story is correct, (and that's a big if) then that is an interesting point. We never have three hour gun battles during a raid unless we absolutely want the people inside taken alive. If it was a normal raid, and we took that much fire, we're probably just drop a 500lb bomb on the place and be done with it.

The terrorists blew up the house when an Iraqi assault team tried to break into the house, the blast killed four Iraqi soldiers and wounded ten policemen and also killed all of the hiding terrorists.

This happens every now and then. During a raid, we've seen people decide not to be taken alive, and detonate themselves. Sometimes it's just a low level suicide bomber, sometimes its a senior leader who doesn't want to be taken alive. AMZ is rumored to wear a suicide vest at all times, and this is likely the case. He is unlikely to be taken alive.

Eight charred bodies were found in the scene, one of them belongs to a woman.

Perhaps AMZ meeting with one of his wives? Him plus a small security detail plus his wife? It's not like a guy on the run travels with a platoon sized element of bodyguards.

All in all, the details make sense. We just need it from a better source.

I think that the surviving bomber had a lot to do with this if it's true.

"but I pray it's true"

I HOPE that it's true as well, but maybe you should keep God out of it...

very possible, if true....and I sure hope it is this time.

I would NOT doubt that the threat on King Abdullah's life, along with the recent bombings have as well. The Jordanian people have been protest AQ and al-Zarqawi....that is a FIRST, ever.

This would be great. I just hope they can find enough of him to prove it is him. One reason I think the Democrats are so eager to escalate the Iraq pullout is they know we are passing the worse of it and things are indeed getting better. Look for next year after successful Iraqi elections in December and the execution of Saddam Hussein for the Democrats to racket up the posturing to make it seem as if they are forcing the White Houses hand to bring troops home.

I couldn't figure why all of the sudden they were more hysterical than usual and then I realized it is because they think the whole Iraq war was a lie, we can't win diatribe is about to be made irrelevant. So they are anticipating the possibility of a real pullout before the 2006 elections and want to be positioned to take credit for it. They would have to be blind to not see the stars lining up in the favor of a major vindication of the Bush Administration. Saddam's trial is going to be back in the news soon and with certain success in the Demcember elections the left will have lost the antiwar card.
I do hope we can bring most of our soldiers home in a big World War II style celebration. That is what they deserve for all of their hard work when it is finished. It is not anti-patriotic to want them home, but it is traitorous to want them to fail.

Yep....but I don't and won't believe it until I see DNA evidence that he's been killed.........or MSM don mourning clothes...

Then, I want his head on a pike - delivered to the well of the Senate to bring tears to the eyes of Clinton, Kennedy, Kerry, Biden, Byrd, Levin, Shummer, Reid and all those other cheese eating surrender monkeys calling themselves - SENATORS...

HE PISSED OFF KING ABDULLAH!

Exactly, AND his own family, more than 50 of whom ran an ad in Jordanian papers today repudiating him. I'm getting a sense the Mideast may be turning the corner in its coddling of terrorists, because the terror has hit home.
