DEBKAfile Exclusive: Eight high-ranking al Qaeda leaders blew themselves up after a large American force Sunday noon laid siege to a building in which they were barricaded in Mosul, northern Iraq.
November 20, 2005, 5:19 PM (GMT+02:00)
The US force, backed by helicopters and tanks, was led to the location by an intelligence tip. The troops had evacuated the area and were preparing to storm the building when the terrorists killed themselves.
Some Arab sources report that American unit is now busy trying to identify the 8 bodies, hoping against hope that Abu Musab al Zarqawi is among them. This is not confirmed by US military sources.
If we did get him, the Dems would just say it was "stunt" to take pressure off of Bush.
Your right! It's a Rovian Plot (TM)!
To the extent this operation is for real is it consistent with other action reports that indicate, to me, we are starting to get more and better intelligence. Given that we are fighting a guerilla war, solid intel is the most valuable field asset. In any event, sounds like we now have 8 more "good" terrorists for the pile and that's always a beautiful thing.
True, but I always put "liberal" in quotes, because they are usually anything but truly "liberal". Actually they're usually always intolerant fascists and dictators. Like Teddy for instance.
I will file this with all the other Zarqawi is dead/captured stories until I see GW on TV with a big shit-eating grin on his face saying "yep you heard right, we got the bastard."
Nearly 50 Iraqis Killed in Suicide Attacks [interesting Zarqawi info]

A U.S. and Iraqi raid on a suspected al Qaeda in Iraq safe house in Mosul sparked a three-hour firefight in which four insurgents and four policemen were killed and three guerrillas blew themselves up, said Gov. Duraid Kashmoulaof Nineveh province.
Iraqi and U.S. forces had suspected Abu Musab Zarqawi, leader of Iraq's most feared insurgent group, might be at the house, Kashmoula said. Zarqawi's whereabouts have been the topic of a stream of murky reports; U.S. military officials have said they believe Zarqawi has vowed not to be taken alive.
The U.S. military was examining the dead late Saturday, the governor said. U.S. military spokesmen in Baghdad said they had no information other than word of the firefight.

MOSUL, Iraq U.S. and Iraqi forces raided a farmhouse in northern Iraq at dawn Saturday, searching for suspected members of al-Qaeda in Iraq. Eight insurgents and four Iraqi policemen were killed, officials said.
Brig. Said Ahmed al-Jubouri, the spokesman for the Mosul police, said Iraqi police and U.S. soldiers surrounded a house in the al-Sukar neighborhood of Mosul, 225 miles northwest of Baghdad.
A fierce gunfight erupted and three of the insurgents detonated explosives, killing themselves. Five more died fighting, while four police officers were also killed, he added.
Al-Jubouri said officials were attempting to identify the dead insurgents.
Nineva province Governor Duraid Kashmola confirmed the report, adding that one woman was among the dead insurgents.
U.S. officials in the area were not immediately available for comment.
Thanks. :-)
