SEATTLE — This fall, David Allen started his new job as chairman of the University of Washington's Women's Studies Department. Allen's position marks a nationwide first: A man heading an academic field born out of the women's liberation movement. "I think it says that there's a broad range of people who have a set of commitments and concerns around justice for women. Some of those people are men, some of them aren't," Allen told FOX News. Click in the video box to the right for a complete report by FOX News' Dan Springer. Campus reaction to Allen's appointment has been mixed, but almost everyone is surprised. Some have called the hire progressive, but one doctoral candidate in women's studies scoffed at the notion that no one else was qualified except this "straight, white guy." David Hodge, dean of the University's College of Arts and Sciences, was surprised he had to defend his choice. "I meant no message by this appointment other than I thought this was by far the best person to lead this department into the future. It's also, I think, an affirmation of the evolution of this field," Hodge said....

You know, if this became a trend, I think "Women's Studies" would go the way of phrenology and alchemy.

If women's studies is to be politically correct, 50% of the chairs for these departments should be men.

Well, since this happened I guess I can grudgingly accept a female to head a college's Men's Studies Dept.

One can only hope. However, a sizable number of men now specialize in male bashing. They could prove more worrisome than their female counterparts.

He maintains that his goal is to promote and hire so many talented women in the program that he'll go down in university history books as the department's last chair-"man."

Trying not to read between the lines here.

So many possibilities at interpretation.

Now, now. If this guy's an idiot, that might even raise the possibility that over half the humanities professors out there are total idiots. But let's be careful about saying things like that. Must think happy thoughts.

I love these off-the-wall new-age departments of "the academy".

IIRC, the "Peace Studies" department at a local state U. was having
some conflicts over the location of a new building for their department.

I just love it when libs/lefties have a head-on by virtue of conflict
on a number of their sacred cow dogma.

Ugh. Prepare for "Metrosexual studies" and scholarly writing like "Male cosmetology through the ages".

A male Department Chairperson can play on the computer, schmooze at cocktail parties, hold pointless departmental meetings and write memos no one reads just as well as a woman Department Chairperson.

"One Legged Body Piercing Transsexual Studies" can't be far behind. Particularly if the government chooses to fund it.

It's so nice to see a man break thru the "Taffeta Ceiling"...and the way these women jealously guard their fiefdoms...you'd think they themselves were "straight, white guys."

A degree in Women's Stdies is a fast track for a special career...

or perhaps...

Or maybe this is the best summary...
