CAPITOL HILL (AP) -- There's been heated debate on the House floor regarding a GOP effort to force a vote on Congressman John Murtha's call for an immediate withdrawal from Iraq.
Democrats charge the effort is a cheap political stunt and a personal attack.
Instead of offering Murtha's resolution, Republicans plan to reject a similarly worded resolution offered by one of their own to show support for US troops.
Democrats say that's a "counterfeit" resolution, charging it guts Murtha's thoughtful approach to the situation.
The fiery, emotional debate climaxed when Ohio Congresswoman Jean Schmidt, who is the lowest in seniority, recounted a message a Marine colonel wanted to send to Murtha.
She said he told her that "cowards cut and run, Marines never do."
Democrats booed and shouted her down, bringing the House to a standstill.
Schmidt for President! Keep calling Democrats cowards and let them get mad and storm the aisles. They are friggin' losers.
Give her Frist's job!
I'm in the first District Ohio but I'm as proud of her as any 2nd District Repbublican tonight!
Also, General Wesley Clarke ended up with more smart bombs that good intelligence. (There's a joke in there somewhere). That's how he ended up ordering the bombing of the Chinese Embassy.
Dammit... Stricken, per her request. Why do Republicans always back down in these word wars? We can't call them cowards, but since Schmidt's comment I've never heard the rats use the word 'lied' as much as they are tonight. Are they backing down? No.
following
Nancy Pelosi is on cspan now singing the praises of Murtha. Republicans have sunk to new lows even for them. blah blah blah
Gingrey R-GA talking now. Praises our Troops. Our troops are listening and hear the cheap talk about their efforts. Calls on dims to put their votes on the record.
15 minute vote.
Long-time War Hawk, Murtha is an Angry Dove
With a documented record of being critical of the Iraq War since at least 2003, no serious person could possibly confuse Murtha with a "long-time war hawk."
Just another example, a particularly egregious one, of an MSM lie, bold as day, and in a headline.
The vote is here. Pedictions ?
Prediction : some lib in the House will file an ethics complaint against Schmidt by year's end. :(
party line except a couple of gutless republicans who want to appear "reasonable"
In fairness, the 'lowest' remark does have some reason to exist. The person that yeilded her floor time introduced her as the newest member or somthing.
There we go.
