CAPITOL HILL (AP) -- There's been heated debate on the House floor regarding a GOP effort to force a vote on Congressman John Murtha's call for an immediate withdrawal from Iraq.
Democrats charge the effort is a cheap political stunt and a personal attack.
Instead of offering Murtha's resolution, Republicans plan to reject a similarly worded resolution offered by one of their own to show support for US troops.
Democrats say that's a "counterfeit" resolution, charging it guts Murtha's thoughtful approach to the situation.
The fiery, emotional debate climaxed when Ohio Congresswoman Jean Schmidt, who is the lowest in seniority, recounted a message a Marine colonel wanted to send to Murtha.
She said he told her that "cowards cut and run, Marines never do."
Democrats booed and shouted her down, bringing the House to a standstill.
Thanks for the ping!
Makes you wonder what all the hoopla was about .. they got what they want, now on record and nobody supported Murtha's thoughts on the subject.
Final vote (resolution to withdraw immediately):
YEA:3
NAY:398
Voting "present" but not taking a stand:5
Not Voted:28
I'm wondering who the one RINO surrender monkey who voted for immediate withdrawal was? Is this going to be a vote for the record with all the names and how they voted? Or do they all get to hide their votes in anonymity?
He was clear and articulate. Really made the case for our guys.
We can't get CSPAN in Canada and I tried their website but all they had was a program about books. Listening to CNN is a waste of time and we can't get Fox over the air.
OOPS, several slipped in after time was up.
Wait a bit and I'll post the final -final vote... They are still voting even though the clock ran out 5 minutes ago
Snicker ; )
OK, Looks like: the one Yea republican vote changed his mind, or something Now it is three Dem Yeas and no Rep. yeas.
We got DSL recently and since we don't have cable it has been quite an experience to view cspan.
It's that dude from NC.
Good luck surviving the primary next time man.
I wonder who the flipflopping Rep. was. Or maybe he just leaned on the wrong button.
I wonder who the 3 Dems are.
OK, hypocrites. At least 187 Demo reps. say we should not withdraw from Iraq now. So their votes do not match their treasonous rhetoric. What a load of morons.
Final vote in the resolution to withdraw immediately from Iraq looks like:
YEA: 3
NAY: 403
Present (but not willing to take a stand): 6
Not voting: 22
He didn't slam the gavel, but I guess it is done.
Thanks, House Republicans, you have done something very significant today.
Listenin' on Savage! Thanks.
Thanks for posting the final vote! I blinked and missed it.
Headlines (if any!) should be interesting.
The Nea was John Linder. He is either chairman or #2 on rules committee.Probably a parlimentary manuver knowing he would change at end.
Those voting FOR the resolution:
McKinney, Serrano, Wexler (all dims)
Those answering present:
Capuano, Clay, Hinchey, McDermott, Nadler, Owens (all dims)
The 3 Yes votes:
McKinney, Serrano, Wexler (all dims)
Cool, thanks for that...
Now McDermott, who refused to take a stand, is now bloviating about how it is all so unfair....
But then McDermott has ALWAYS been a weasel, so no surprise at that. Just about no one is left in the room, but he loves to tell lies, even to himself.
