Whatever happened to Semper Fi?
Congressman John Murtha, Democrat of Pennsylvania, is a retired Marine colonel, decorated Vietnam veteran, ranking member of the House defense appropriations subcommittee, longtime supporter of the military and a noted hawk who was an early advocate of the U.S. incursion into Iraq - a man, in short, none would call faint of heart. When such a figure declares that the time has come for America to turn tail and bug out, his views carry more weight than do the similar assessments of the Dennis Kuciniches and Barbara Boxers and Cindy Sheehans of the world. But, sadly, he is as wrongheaded as they are, and Murtha might as well be sending up the white flag for all the terrorist gangs to see. Doubtless there is much rejoicing in Al Qaeda's rat holes this day over still another encouraging cut-and-run signal from U.S. shores that maybe someday soon, with U.S. troops pulled out, the rodents will have Iraq - and beyond - all to themselves.
Murtha's mouthings arrive hard on the heels of ex-President Bill Clinton, whose utterly disgraceful shame-on-America remarks in Dubai the other day could only have made it sufficiently plain to many millions of Middle Easterners, both those who are with us and those who are not, that the United States cannot be counted on to stand behind the historic mission that toppled the butcher Saddam Hussein, helped persuade crazed Libya to give up its nuclear intentions, was instrumental in driving Syria out of Lebanon and is daily leaning hard on the malevolent mullahs of Iran.
Defeatism, it's called. Willingness to give it all up. In Washington, it isn't so much the war effort is going badly as it is the poll numbers are going badly. Congress has a nervous eye on America's popular distemper, and many on Capitol Hill want some idea of a withdrawal deadline. But a commander would be mad to even consider setting such a deadline, inviting an implacable foe to sit tight and wait it out.
There's still a job to be done - a miserable slog, no doubt, and one, it is true, that could and should have been undertaken more efficiently from the beginning. But the job cannot be left unfinished. Yes, defeatism is in the American wind, there's no question about that. It must not prevail. For what is already in the wind far across the sea is the gleeful, hideous laughter of a triumphant enemy.
President's smackdown comments today against Dems & Hagel
President Bush was later questioned about Vice President Cheney's remarks from yesterday:
Question: Mr. President, Vice President Cheney called it reprehensible for critics to question how you took the country to war, but Senator Hagel says it's patriotic to ask those kinds of questions. Who do you think is right?
PRESIDENT BUSH: The Vice President.
Question: Why?
PRESIDENT BUSH: Well, look, ours is a country where people ought to be able to disagree, and I expect there to be criticism. But when Democrats say that I deliberately misled the Congress and the people, that's irresponsible. They looked at the same intelligence I did, and they voted -- many of them voted to support the decision I made. It's irresponsible to use politics. This is serious business making -- winning this war. But it's irresponsible to do what they've done. So I agree with the Vice President.
PRESIDENT BUSH: I think people ought to be allowed to ask questions. It is irresponsible to say that I deliberately misled the American people when it came to the very same intelligence they looked at, and came to the -- many of them came to the same conclusion I did. Listen, I -- patriotic as heck to disagree with the President. It doesn't bother me. What bothers me is when people are irresponsibly using their positions and playing politics. That's exactly what is taking place in America.

I don't think that the US is quite at the point of a surrender if there's another attack on US soil. Of course, the media would wet their pants, but I don't think that the public would be quite as cowardly as the congress. I think an attack on US soil would piss more people off, although there would be plenty of play in the media of "we forced them to do it!"
A strike here would be a bad idea right now. But maybe sometime next year, before the election...

I am a Viet Nam era American male who has never served in the military. I did not volunteer and I received a high number in the draft lottery. However, I do, sir, recognize cowardice and disloyalty when I see it and hear it - and yesterday I saw it and heard it from you.
There are American boys and American girls dead today because of your remarks; I hope you can live with that. It is useless for me to point out that your statement gave inestimable aid and comfort to our enemies, you must have factored that into your shameless political calculations.
Lives for votes, Congressman, and for a moment on the national stage.

I usually would be the last one to jump on a former Marine; Obviously, the fact that he showed up with Pelosi shows that maybe he has something medical going on.

Peterson wasn't the only Pennsylvania legislator opposed to the pay raise for soldiers. Murtha (D) not only voted against it but he also argued against it on the floor. Murtha also voted to raise his own pay (but didn't even bother to change it afterwards). I suppose that adding to their individual wealth is more important to them than helping out the soldiers they put at risk (remember both of these hypocrits supported the war).

Wasn't Lincoln in the Black Hawk War?
Lincoln, three months in the Illinois Militia during the Blackhawk War and Truman both served.
Democrats always revert to form, regardless of how well trained they have been in the past. I served with a few Marines in the early 70s who could not wait to get out and protest the war -- most of them were probably among the last drafted by the USMC.
