MOSCOW - The head of the government in Russia’s war-torn Chechnya was seriously injured in a car crash in Moscow, the NTV television channel said on Friday.

Chechen Prime Minister Sergei Abramov was hospitalised after his car collided with a truck outside the Russian capital overnight, the television channel said.

Doctors operated on his liver and kidneys and he was recovering in an emergency unit, the channel said.

“Currently, Sergei Abramov is conscious. Several of his ribs are broken,” Ziyad Sabsabi, a Chechen government representative in Moscow, was quoted by Interfax news agency as saying.

Abramov was appointed to head Chechnya’s government in March last year.

It seems to me a "car crash" is a convenient cover for severe wounds caused by a bomb or terrorist attack. I am not saying this is the case, but I would listen to anything the Russians said on Chechnya with a grain of salt.
