Once again, the diplos and 'realists' play checkers while Bush plays chess.

U.S., S.Korean leaders agree to peace treaty talks

KYONGJU, South Korea, Nov 17 (Reuters) - The leaders of the United States and South Korea agreed on Thursday that talks should be held on replacing the armistice that halted the 1950-53 Korean War with a peace treaty.

In a joint statement issued after a summit in this ancient royal capital, U.S. President George W. Bush and South Korean President Roh Moo-hyun said they agreed that the discussions should be held with all the parties involved separately from the so-called six-party talks on North Korea's nuclear programmes.

"The two leaders agreed these peace treaty talks should improve confidence and reduce military tension on the Korean peninsula," the Korean language version of the statement said.

A lot has come out of the six party talks, and I thought it just might end in Korean unification. Unfortunately, the press is so invested in defending Carter's bribery that they have not covered this as it has helped the countries work out lots of nagging problems between them,

I think it's becoming increasingly clear to the American people that Harry Truman's quagmire continues with no end in sight. We need a clear timetable to pull out of this historically volatile trouble spot, in order to permit a more nuanced view.

Actually, the U.S. simply needs to acknowledge that it makes no sense to maintain a permanent military presence in a nation to protect it against a hostile neighbor that has a smaller population, a much lower standard of living, and an economy about as dysfunctional as that of Detroit.
