Warwick, R.I. -- Liberal Republican Sen. Lincoln Chafee refused to support President Bush in the last election, opposed the GOP tax cuts and was the only Republican to vote against the use of military force in Iraq, a war he has likened to Vietnam.
So why, a year before the election, is the GOP embracing Chafee and spending close to $200,000 on television ads aimed at undercutting his conservative rival in the Republican primary, Cranston Mayor Stephen Laffey?
Like him or not, Republicans consider Chafee their best chance to win in heavily Democratic Rhode Island.

A RINO who votes with the agenda 50% is better than a dem who is against it 100%. I hate it too, but until we can start to capture some state majorities, there's not much choice.
Your sermon has nothing to do with the topic at hand. There are selective RINO states in the N.E. which is a political reality.
What do we "win" if Chafee wins?

I appreciate your logic. I usually take a severe beating on this site for saying such things. One thing that I'd also add that is more important than punishing RINOs is the troops we have in the field right now. We need to think very hard about turning Congress over to the Democrats. They wouldn't hesitate a NY minute to cut funding to our troops as a way to defeat America.
This will be fun, though not for "our" side I'm afraid.
As far as the "purge" goes ... they (Republicans) have essentially wasted 6 good years, will be tied up in knots for the next two, and will have gotten a few federal judgeships for our troubles.
Toss the neutered eunuch's out on the street, bring in the Rat's and let the American people see where they will take us. It won't be to the land of plenty.
And then, maybe just then, the revolution may begin.
Like the committees that rammed through the "highway" and "farm" porkfests? The same committees that made sure Congress refused, by a vote of 85-to-15, to delete the Alaskan Bridge To Nowhere? Passed the assault on the First Amendment? The Trillion-Dollar "free" pills for greedy geezers vote-buying scam?
How is that a good thing?

Of course those are terrible events, but the democrats would have produced even worse.
50% from a RINO is better than zero from the democrats.
The RNC/RSCC has no business getting involved in primaries. It only hurts the party in the long run.
Tough call. Do you like what your getting out of the weak, RINO controlled GOP Senate? Lets see if we get Alioto. I'd say if we hold the White House we should hold the Senate, but conversely I'd say if we lose the WH we should clean house, even if it means going into the minority status for a while. As it is the R's have really failed on the key vision of smaller government. I'm a lot more interested in that than most of what else they have done. The good news is that if the D's get control they will badly overplay their hand, again.

Haven't we tried losing before? Do you think people learned from 8 years of Clinton? It was too close an election for me to claim that the American people rejected Clintonism. Of course there's the argument that Dubya's compassionate conservativism wasn't "real" conservatism but warmed over liberalism. Fine, but those who were more conservative got nowhere in the primaries. In fact, McCain was Bush's biggest challenge - not anyone more conservative.
And then, maybe just then, the revolution may begin.
More like Pickett's charge, but best of luck to you. I do think we need to remember that there may be one more Supreme Court pick to replace Stevens. Who will be picked with a Democrat Senate? This time we'd be lucky to get a Miers nominee through. Another near-term factor to consider is our troops in the field - we made a promise to them when We the people sent them to war. A Democrat congress would cut their fudning in a NY minute and bring them home in defeat. Then, when faced with an increase in terrorism they'd blame it on Bush's "cowboy" policies while formally apologizing to the world.
Am I mistaken or didn't the Republican party not too long ago have a policy of not messing in Republican primaries? At least not OPENLY like they have been doing recently.
The way the Republicans have been acting recently, we may see this before the Democrats take over.
No kidding. Extremely discouraging.
Our country deserves better. The question is whether we'll get it before the next revolution upheavel.

A win by Chafee is not a win by the GOP.
Maybe they see an incumbent having done the job they wanted done and they don't want to fire him.
