1. All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside. No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.

That section of the COnstitution needs to be repealed.

Amended. I doubt if we would repeal the entire 14th Amendment. And there is a procedure to do so. We need to redefine how citizenship is obtained.

They're easy enough to find. In most larger cities you can't avoid finding them.

If you want a simple way to find them, create an actual award program for turning in illegal aliens. It would be funded by fines paid by the employers of illegal aliens. Instant incentive to turn in those 20-25 million.

"It's all so simple...just identify, locate and verify the immigration status of 20 - 25 million suspected illegals and boot 'em out today! And of course there would be no negative effect on the economy if approximately 10% of the workforce, illegal or not, were deported "now".Yup, sounds like a win-win situation to me."

YEah, congratulations on being completely ignornant on the illegal immigration issue.

Illegal aliens already cost us more in taxes and economic impact than they benefit us with "cheap" labor. Not to mention the economic impact of crime, like murder, rape, gang activity, fraud, etc. - plus the human cost.

And the labor market? It would adjust, like it always has. Either through adjusting wages to REAL free market costs (not the perverted market) or by modernizing via automation to replace lost workers (a little more expensive initially, but much more profitable in the long run)

Everyone knows that freedom means the obligation to be your own selfish pig. You are a poster child for everything despicable about "conservatives" (really statists who would support the IRS, higher taxes, and implementation of a police state if it would further their immigration hobby horse) in the immigration mess we have.

If the "conservatives" on the immigration threads are considered the core of true America, then we SHOULD just open the border, cause there is not much here worth saving. Silly me, thinking that the inscription on the base of lady liberty actually MEANT something.

Self reliance, self determination, freedom to try and fail and try and fail and try again, no reliance on government but a trust in the free market and freedom of speech and ideas. All these are replaced on the left by a bunch of mewling whining socialist snits, but I fear that they are simply mirrored on the "right" by a bunch of statist who think that wrapping themelves in a flag and quoting a bible verse once in a while inures them from the charge that they are simply for ceding power to the state every bit as quickly as a leftist....., just so long as it is "our" people in power. Hasn't the putrifying stench of this current republican congress taught you people ANYTHING? The problem is the centralization of power in DC, and the halfwits here are willing to aid and abet this because someone says "Buenos dias" and smells like garlic.

It is pathetic.

How would we identify the illegals to deport? Should police have the authority to stop anyone on the streets and ask for their papers? Would every citizen be required to have a chip implanted for easy ID? I think strong efforts must be made to close the border. I think government should expend resources to pressure and perhaps jail employers who knowingly hire illegals. Citzenship proof should be required for any government program, or bank transaction.

But, people that think that deportation of every single illegal alien in this country can be done without a huge cost, both in dollars and Constitutional rights is deluded.

That's like saying the 2nd amendment applies only to militia members.

Including ILLEGAL aliens - by definition, here ILLEGALLY and not "subject to the jurisdiction thereof" was NOT the intention of the 14th amendment.

Most of those people will eventually want to go back, to visit families, retire, etc.

Build the freakin' wall and prevent most of the immigration and good part of the illegals will eventually deport themselves. Then you can hunt down the rest. (And a lot of 'em we're not gonna want to deport anyway.)

And stop attractin' more of 'em by floating "not-an-amnesty" amnesty program trial balloons.

There are congressmen who have suggested just that.

In fact, the congressmen have stated that the clause "All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof," has been MISINTERPRETED to apply to any person born in the U.S. automatically becomes a U.S. citizen; however, they claim that when this was written, its intention was to assure that citizenship is bestowed only upon those people within whom U.S. JURISIDCTION resides....Specifically, I read that these words were put into place so that children born of people NOT UNDER THE JURISDICTION OF THE U.S., i.e., foreign diplomats, were NOT and could not be US citizens.....as the infant's parents WERE NOT UNDER U.S. JURISDICTION.

Illegal aliens, therefore, are also NOT UNDER U.S. jurisdiction, so their citizenship belongs to the country of the infant's parents.

People who make excuses as to why we can't enforce our most basic laws are cowards.

You don't have to violate the constitution. You just have to enforce the laws.

When you catch an illegal alien in any other interaction with the police- like any crimes or traffic stops - you DEPORT THEM, not let them go.

When the border patrol catches illegal aliens near the border, they DEPORT THEM, not give them notices to appear for a deportation hearing, and have 90% never show up.

Then you get the bush administration to actually enforce our workplace laws! I know, it's a shock, but we actually have laws against hiring illegal aliens. GWB has dropped enforcement to almost ZERO now.

Create a reward system funded by employer fines, and you'll soon find millions of illegal aliens turned in - and the cost of deporting them will be paid by it, too.

I also recognize we've got, according to some estimates, 10 to 11 million illegals already in this country working. And the cost of identifying all of those people and sending them back would be stupendous. It would be billions and billions of dollars...

As luck would have it, we HAVE billions and billions of dollars.

Apologists who make excuses for illegal behavior and brush under the rug all the murderers, rapists, gang members, and drunk drivers who come her via our lax immigration laws make me sick.

I'm not trying to be a smart alick here so please don't get the wrong idea.
But I'm wondering where in the constitution it says children born to non citizens are citizens?
Does it really address this issue or is it one of those things that some court found in there buried "between" the lines?

Do you have a few million in campaign contributions? You can then pick and choose which laws you want to ignore. Just by the appropriate members of congress and you're good to go!

The dirty little secret is that immigration, legal and illegal, is the only reason that our population continues to grow, unlike Europe, which has decining birthrates and stagnant economies.

We need immigrant labor, whether it is at the top end of the scale in terms of medicine, engineering, IT, etc. or at the low end in terms of unskilled and semi-skilled labor. We have an unemployment rate of about 5% and a growth rate of 3.8% over the last quarter. Something needs to be done about illegal immigration, i.e., controlling our borders and regularizing the flow of labor into our country. H-1B visas are one such example.
