How would we identify the illegals to deport? Should police have the authority to stop anyone on the streets and ask for their papers? Would every citizen be required to have a chip implanted for easy ID? I think strong efforts must be made to close the border. I think government should expend resources to pressure and perhaps jail employers who knowingly hire illegals. Citzenship proof should be required for any government program, or bank transaction.

But, people that think that deportation of every single illegal alien in this country can be done without a huge cost, both in dollars and Constitutional rights is deluded.

People who make excuses as to why we can't enforce our most basic laws are cowards.

You don't have to violate the constitution. You just have to enforce the laws.

When you catch an illegal alien in any other interaction with the police- like any crimes or traffic stops - you DEPORT THEM, not let them go.

When the border patrol catches illegal aliens near the border, they DEPORT THEM, not give them notices to appear for a deportation hearing, and have 90% never show up.

Then you get the bush administration to actually enforce our workplace laws! I know, it's a shock, but we actually have laws against hiring illegal aliens. GWB has dropped enforcement to almost ZERO now.

Create a reward system funded by employer fines, and you'll soon find millions of illegal aliens turned in - and the cost of deporting them will be paid by it, too.

The dirty little secret is that immigration, legal and illegal, is the only reason that our population continues to grow, unlike Europe, which has decining birthrates and stagnant economies.

We need immigrant labor, whether it is at the top end of the scale in terms of medicine, engineering, IT, etc. or at the low end in terms of unskilled and semi-skilled labor. We have an unemployment rate of about 5% and a growth rate of 3.8% over the last quarter. Something needs to be done about illegal immigration, i.e., controlling our borders and regularizing the flow of labor into our country. H-1B visas are one such example.
