Chertoff to Hannity: Removing 10~11M ILLEGALS too expensive and impractical
FoxNews Channel: Hannity & Colmes ^ | November 14, 2005 | Transcript

Posted on 11/15/2005 6:51:13 AM PST by DTogo

...HANNITY: Because you had made a controversial statement, and you seem to be backing off of it now, and it was that people that are here illegally, that they all ought to be sent back.

I'm paraphrasing.

And it seems like now you've sort of backed off that position a little bit, because there are million that we estimate that are in this country illegally.

Why wouldn't we send them back?

CHERTOFF: ...I also recognize we've got, according to some estimates, 10 to 11 million illegals already in this country working. And the cost of identifying all of those people and sending them back would be stupendous. It would be billions and billions of dollars...

HANNITY: Why — in that sense, aren't you really rewarding those that didn't respect our laws and sovereignty? In other words, OK, you're saying, you came into this country illegally.

Now that we've identified you, we're going to let you even stay longer and make money, and then you can go back in three to six years.

Why don't we say, no, you're here illegally, you didn't respect our laws, you ought to go home? Why don't we just say that?

CHERTOFF: Well, Sean, you know, it's really an issue of practicality.

I mean, as a practical matter, we've got to identify these people and pull them out of the shadows.

Now, this is not an amnesty. This is not — the president's proposal is not a path to citizenship. It's clearly temporary, and it clearly envisions people who would have to commit to go back....

It is just that I see SO MUCH GOOD in the latino community that I want to cheer for them, and I really get my hackles up when I see stuff that I think portrays them as shiftless, cheats, thieves, criminals and worse.

My wife is Latina. I have had some great clients and friends who are from Central and Latin America. I know that, when compared to welfare freeloaders 5th generation American, they often have stronger work ethics. Still, the amount of wealth transfer going to illegal aliens is of galactic size proportions. It will increase greatly the more "legitimate" they become, e.g., as they become citizens.

"I'd rather choke to death on my own vomit then allow an arrogant, condencending, elitist, judgemental jerk like you to tell me what I believe, or to allow you to define me in ANY way.

I don't need to define you--your own posts on this thread have rather nicely taken care of that.

I try never to pay much attention to what quislings may think of me or other loyal American conservatives.

"Have a nice life."

Thanks. You too...

I would advise CA to change their laws so CITIZENS can keep more of those freebies!!!!!

Just in case you've never heard of Proposition 187 in California, approved by two-thirds of the voters a few years back, it was aimed at decreasing the cost of illegal immigration by denying welfare and other benefits to the hordes who live here. ONE liberal judge, Mariana Pfaelzer, overturned the votes of the majority of California voters and threw our votes out, period.

Gray Davis, the incompetent governor at the time, refused to fight for us by challenging that one judge's decision. We threw him out.

The new "terminator" Governor has terminated nothing, nor has he fought much of anything having to do with illegal aliens. He's following the lead of most Republicans who have joined the liberals in allowing this invasion to continue against the will of the people.

Yes, California has become illegal alien heaven, and we're being outnumbered, and it's coming to your state soon.

The Bush administration has failed America. The borders should have been secured after 9/11/01 - they're still virtually open.

Then in Arizona we tried to learn from CA mistakes and passed Prop 200. Well, apparently, not letting illegals vote or collect any kind of state welfare was not specific enough - so the next state that tries this should beware. Janet Napolitano and Terry Goddard (flaming elitist libs) managed to make voting easier than checking out a movie, and restricted what illegals cannot collect to only a few items, including something about eyeglasses.

"I mentioned one."

Not to me, you didn't.

"How many do you need?"

So far, you haven't named one. Looks like you don't have much, despite your reckless race baiting accusations.

Put up or shut up.

I HAVE to believe your are against legit business people because everything you are arguing FOR in your posts hammers the crap out of law abiding business owners. All your posts support an anti-legit business persons point of view.

Not to sound overly simplistic, but you are one of a handful of people here on FR that feel so adamant about helping people who are not citizens of this country at the EXPENSE of law abiding citizens and business owners.

This is another reason why shamnesty is a complete slap in the face to legit business owners as well as law abiding foreigners waiting in line to emigrate here.

The legit business owners will not respond very nicely to RINO Republicans and Dummies who vote for shamnesty.
Imagine for a minute how hard SOME people try to play by the rules (at great monetary expense I might add)......and then because some chowder-headed sock-puppet like Chertoff comes along and basically says it too "inconvenient" to do whats right...so we ll just "normalize" the illegals.

Try wearing the "mercy shoe" on the other foot for a while and walk a mile in the legit businessperson shoes. I guarantee your outlook will change.

"Entry level workers like this among American born are hard to find."

Again, I am amazed. Where do you live?
In my state, we have trade high schools. Most of these kids who graduate have spent 2 years out of 4 training in their chosen trade. You wanna know what happens when they graduate?

They rarely can get employment in their chosen fields of Heating-HVAC, the automotive repair trades, Carpentry, Electro-mechanical, etc...
Why?
Because these jobs by and large go to illegals. This is the truth....in my state, again I do not know where you live.

Now these kids have to look forward to stocking the shelves at local grocery stores...instead of getting the apprentice level jobs in their trade.
So once again, you are pitting those Americans who DO play by the rules against those who do not. Why should these apprentice jobs go to illegals? Can you tell me why you feel these jobs should not be taken by Americans who have had the training and in fact DO have the desire to do these jobs?
And yes...when I talk to dirtball employers who scout out help that are illegals, they DO tell me it is primarily because they do not have to worry about SS, Work mans Comp, Payroll taxes, OSHA, and a bunch of other alphabet soup government syndicates. That is a fact. They can cut overhead (wages) by at LEAST 30% by hiring illegals.

An absolutely awesome analysis, czar!

Bookmarked until I can devote enough time for a fitting response.

I have been in this particular thread subject more than once here. It REALLY pisses me off, I flame on, and things go nuclear for a while, I get suspended (smile), and life goes on.

In the interest of civility, let me attempt to lay out the problem, as I see it:

1) FR is dominated by a group of people on the immigration subject who see the mess we have and believe the only real solution is to lock down the borders and expel the illegals, first. Any attempts to let them back in have to take second seat to this. Proponents are divided between fairly rational persons, Reform Party blue collar types, slobbering xenophobe/racists, and some who are a mix of all three, depending on what day they post. There really is not alot of belief that free market principles should lead in the search for solutions, though. Law Enforcement FIRST, market solutions second, if at all.

2) The non-hateful (but frustrated),sober and judicious crowd doesn't tend to "call out" posters who will say, at times, some of the most hateful, prejudiced, and racist stuff you could ask for. I have seen people snicker and openly laugh about people dying in the desert, getting their eyes put out, drowning, getting their legs cut off, and the like. I have seen people laugh about nuking the entire northern Mexico border, gunning down border hoppers "on sight," etc. I have seen posters make hateful comments on some person who commits a crime because his name is Sanchez, or Pedro, or whatever. This is met with a deafening silence by those who advocate a "closed borders" policy. To us few benighted souls who do not share your solutions, this looks an awful lot like a nod and a wink to the guy next to you at the bar while some chick is raped on a pool table behind you. (apologies to the city of Boston)

3) When #2 happens, and someone who thinks this is WRONG, AND thinks the "close the borders" approach is wrong and misguided, the conversations get heated. I have many times said I think there is a strong current of racist xenophobia running thru these threads. I still believe there is, and believe only the most willfully blind could deny it. When I say it, you would think I accused the whole thread of pimping out their moms to a crowd of horny billy goats. Some will accuse you of emulating Jesse Jackson, screaming "racist" only for your own advantage. Others will justify the "overreaction" on the basis that people are so frustrated with the mess. Some will claim "I am not racist, and have never made racist comments"(my experience is that often that is true). Internet onanists will immediately demand that you document and link. If you do, they disappear, but will make the same damn demand then next time you say it. Some will say they are not racist becaus of some connection with Latinos they have (and some are sincere, I believe, in saying so). Some will just call you "not a true conservative" or "unAmerican." Finally, some will agree that there is racism but that you "don't help" by angering everyone by throwing blanket charges.

Why is all that important? Because my own state history shows that people who support institutional racism (that is also called "statism" for those who wonder where I get the term) never do so by appealing to it outright. It is cloaked in an appeal to states rights, or prosperity, or any number of other shibboleths.

Personally, I am disgusted by the hijacking of the race issue by the left so that you really can't mention the word without people legitimately rolling their eyes and wondering if you are just some guilt mongering refugee from DU. However, that truth doesn't stop the fact that it DOES continually surface here, and that it does poison the debate. I believe it will continue to do so. I am really posting this for the benefit of some here with whom I have had intense discussions, and the subject of race has come up. You know who you are. Just wanted to clear the air, if I could.

Some are not so fortunate even though they don't sit on their ass. Is your point that because someone is unemployed they must be sitting on their ass?

No. I do not know your son and have no idea what his work ethic is. Furthermore, in looking at my post, that was a most injudicious way of complimenting my daughter, I can see how it would look like a backhanded slap at your son, and not some of my daughter's friends. Best of luck to your son.

Chertoff is merely mouthing the words of his employer on this subject.

He's too intelligent a man to REALLY believe that garbage and I would think the administration would have more respect for American intelligence that to manufacture such a lame statement.

I used to think that too, but it seems like the more we question, the more the administration sends us statements and spokespeople who mouth the complete opposite of what most Americans want done with the border situation. Somebody must be buying it or there would be a revolt? Or else, we are all too busy working in order to pay high taxes to support the illegals and the businesses that profit from them.

My, my, my.....you alien defenders preach "tolerance" and "acceptance" but exhibit none yourself. Would that you, and those like you, direct even an iota of that same passion towards retaining and sustaining American values, language, and culture, or even slightly less towards a fellow American over criminal invaders....America would have far less problems.
