Washington How did American interrogation tactics after 9/11 come to include abuse rising to the level of torture? Much has been said about the illegality of these tactics, but the strategic error that led to their adoption has been overlooked.
The Pentagon effectively signed off on a strategy that mimics Red Army methods. But those tactics were not only inhumane, they were ineffective. For Communist interrogators, truth was beside the point: their aim was to force compliance to the point of false confession.

MurryMom; {AKA Accessory to Mass Murder after the fact.} I am curious how you sleep at night knowing your are actively aiding the propaganda efforts of people who rape, murder and torture unarmed undefended civilians in the name of their "Religion"?
You are actively aiding and abetting people who raped, tortured and murdered children at Beslan last year.
Spare us your fraudulent "moralizing". You have blood on your hands and can never get it off. You are actively and knowingly serving as a mouth piece for Osama Bin Laden and Saddam Hussein. Hussein by the way has the innocent blood of millions of his own people on his hands. So spare us your hyper hysteric propaganda you willing Accessory to Mass Murder after the fact.

It's pretty obvious that the old adage, "you catch more flies with honey than with vinegar" applies to this intelligence gathering operation.
Other approaches with prisoners are much more effective than torture. If all of the Iraq citizens that we pick up in our sweeps were fairly and humanely treated during their stay with us it would be extremely effective as public relations toward demonstrating that we are there to help them. In a controlled environment such as a detention center, intelligence agents can be mixed in with the population and quickly get much more info than by torture.
The only downside to a more humane approach is that sadistic christofascists in the Bush Administration won't have any fun.

Other approaches with prisoners are much more effective than torture.Depends on how one defines 'torture' and how that 'torture' is used. One particular officer shot his gun toward a prisoner. The bullet lodged into the wall very close to the prisoner's head. The prisoner immediately spilled the beans about an upcoming roadside bombing. Saved lives.
I consider what this officer did to be completely appropriate. I don't see the point of stacking prisoners into naked pyramids, but I don't consider that torture.
Burning flesh with a flame thrower would be torture. Cutting off fingers one knuckle at a time would be torture. However, if the individual was a recent arrest (e.g. in the last day or two), we are quite sure the individual has some information to share, and the torture resulted in us obtaining valuable information that saves lives, I'm all for it.
Doing these kinds of things to prisoners who are unlikely to have any valuable information or to long time detainees is useless and a waste of time.

Excuse me Madame, were the heck were you when Saddam was using his paper shredder? Where were you when the Red Army made pancakes of its Chinese citizens? Where were you when your favorite President, President Clinton, did zip during the Rwanda Holocaust? Where were you when our soldiers were dragged naked through the streets of Mogadishu? Where you when the Chinese and the Khmer Rouge killed millions of Cambodians? Where were you when the Soviet Union imprisoned hundreds of thousands in its Gulags? Where were you when the Soviets walled off tens of millions behind the Iron Curtain.
Here are facts from a real hero. Find the sentence where he says troopers are ordered to fight to the death. Oh, never mind, here is the paragraph just in case you don't find the time to read this marvelous article that you will not find in the NYT.
"The first thing our guys are told is don't get captured. They know that if captured they will be tortured and beheaded on the internet. Zarqawi openly offers bounties for anyone who brings him a live American serviceman. This motivates the criminal element who otherwise don't give a shit about the war. A lot of the beheading victims were actually kidnapped by common criminals and sold to Zarqawi. As such, for our guys, every fight is to the death. Surrender is not an option."

Just another example of the lies that the N.Y. Slimes publishes and the propaganda you swallow, greedily, as whole clothe.
You are a disgrace and why an avowed DEM LIBERAL, such as you, is allowed to remain on FR, is a continual mystery.

FYI...MurryMom is not now, nor has she EVER been a Conservative. She is a damned Dem and a LIBERAL.

I'm a soldier's mother and to you I say, "..............................................". Because this forum is for intelligent adults, I have wisely censored my remarks.
I do not know what motivates you to post such drivel from the NYSlimes on this forum, and I don't care. Our military men and women are right now fighting to protect us all (including sorry folks like you) from terrorists. They don't need to hear the Liberal Loon's Lunacy and neither do I. We have enemies within our own country and they are not all foreigners; which you have made quite obvious.

Make a Liberal happy, hug a terrorist! Afterall, if we would just REASON with them, give them lots of kisses, bake 'em a cake, smother them with hugs and ooodles of respect and a gift certificate for "whatever you want", they'd just be happier than Gump! Ah yes, that's what they want!
Oh wait, that's not what THEY said they wanted, and they have made their case ever so clear, for years and years, and years, and years.....through murder, after murder, after murder, and torture upon torture upon torture of innocent children, women and men.
