President Bush escalated the bitter debate over the Iraq war on Monday, hurling back at Democratic critics the worries they once expressed that Saddam Hussein was a grave threat to the world.
"They spoke the truth then and they're speaking politics now," Bush charged.
Bush went on the attack after Democrats accused the president of manipulating and withholding some pre-war intelligence and misleading Americans about the rationale for war.
"Some Democrats who voted to authorize the use of force are now rewriting the past," Bush said. "They're playing politics with this issue and they are sending mixed signals to our troops and the enemy. That is irresponsible."
The president spoke to cheering troops at this military base at a refueling stop for Air Force One on the first leg of an eight-day journey to Japan, South Korea, China and Mongolia.
During the stopover, he also met privately with families of four slain service members.

Unfortunately, the GOP rank and file has been no better at fighting back against the Dems than the President has. Even now, we are just sitting here and watching the President fire back at them, and there are thousands of them and only one of him, and they have the media on their side.
For some reason, GOPers think that all they've got to do is post a story about something that the Dems have said, and that will be enough in itself to turn people against them. But it isn't working. If anything, it's helping to convince people that the Dems are right. If you repeat a lie enough, people believe it. Why we help the Dems repeat their lies, I don't know.
Since we've only heard crickets for 2.5 years from the White House, anything from Bush on this subject could be considered and "escalation."
After unending months of silence, he finally has ANYTHING to say, and now he's responsible for our national rancor. Great writing, AP.
I think we've all seen this before.
Haven't you ever been in a chat room or a class where someone constantly attacks something politically? They'll do it everyday. Finally, you give a different point of view, and the moderator/teacher gets upset that you're causing a disturbance.
This is just another aspect of "Free speech for me, but not for thee."
earlier today Myles O'Lyin of CNN had rat shill Ron Brown-noser-stein of the LA Slimes on...the topic of conversation was the President fighting back- they played a clip from Friday and Myles O'Lyin asks, "is this rhetoric helpful??"
When the rats spew it the criminal MSM refer to it as "patriotic dissent\debate" yet one someone defends themselves from the GOP it is an "escalation of rhetoric"....
Headline tomorrow: (From undisclosed source) Hang in there terrorist. We will cut and run soon.
TREASON
Pour on the pressure W, and never let up.
Why, Fenton even offers a chat room just for reporters....offers to write up the stories...heck...does it all! Don't think there is a REAL REPORTER in the entire AP. Period.
I LOVE THAT PRESIDENT BUSH IS A MAN OF HIS WORD....A MAN WHO OWNS DIGNITY and COURAGE and a man who UNDERSTANDS right from wrong and will NEVER ALLOW the sick freaks in the press, in the pundit slots and in the loud mouthed dark alleys of democrat politicians to CONTROL what he does. HE IS NOBODY's FOOL and EVERYBODY's ROCK. Even though, with skill and grace, President Bush has a way of making the whining, whimpering, silly and oh so cruel jack arses that scream...' Bush lied' look very foolish.
Our President handed john kerry his cowardly, anti-American award with great grace on veteran's day, cheering the hearts of our beloved vets and letting small men like john kerry and ted kennedy know that the TRUTH WILL ALWAYS WIN IN THE END.
History will NOT be rewritten, liberal style, on our President's watch.
I am SO GLAD THAT PRESIDENT BUSH HAS OUR COUNTRY'S BACK!
Liberals are content when there is no war (unless it is one they start), to hell with genocide and pain in other countries.
Liberals believe that if they spread the mantra that we are in this war under false pretenses...they will win back their power.
They are wrong.
This time...their hypocrisy has gone to far.
This war was ALWAYS Saddam's choice...even up until the warning our President gave 24 hours before we began our move into that cesspool of murder and terrorism.
Saddam chose to ignore UN orders, was given SEVENTEEN CHANCES to comply (after all....he was LUCKY, he INVADED Kuwait, we could have blown that freak to bits back then).
Thank GOD our President has helped the UN to mean something....a task not easy to do.
BTW----has Mark Rich been INDICTED in the oil for food scandal, yet?
Gimme a break!
Was Saddam gettings things out because Jay Rockefeller had warned that war was coming?
You make a very keen observation. Until the President responded to the cowardly and deceitful rewriting of history by the Democrats, the debate was characterized as reasonable, necessary, or thoughtful but never bitter.
Until the President responded, it wasn't even debate. It was DEM statements, and the way the media leaves them, the reader tended to take the DEM statements as statements of fact.
So answering the charges 1) causes a debate, that 2) represents an escalation that 3) is bitter (on the part of the responder).
One can watch the same sort of game play out in chatrooms and discussion forums. ;-)
It's also known as sedition for which there are severe penalties. Enforce the law Mr President. Kinder/gentler don't work no more.
Oh, yes. It's Bush "escalating" when he's defending himself from liberals' delusional spew.
You are so right. Why have the Republicans lost their goldurn nerve? Bunch of wusses!
Bullies always seethe and whine when somebody hits back. They whine loudest when the punches land. Therefore, I view this petulant article, and the similar pissing and moaning from 'Rat quarters, as good news.
We need more balls from our side at this point to start wading into the enemy, use their frigen rotten guts to grease our tank treads......and you know the rest of the story.
Semper Fi.
Amen.
