That is British usage only. It's illogical but it's their custom.
LOL
It makes sense in the context of the empire; the Asians Brits were most likely to encounter were those from the South Asian colonies, what's now India, Pakistan and Bangladesh. So they became "Asians" and the other parts of the continent are "East Asians."
They also call American Indians "Red Indians" to distinguish them from the (to the Brits) more familiar South Asian Indians.
Actually, the largest South African Jewish population in the U.S. is not in Atlanta, but in South Florida. My parents have two South African Jewish families on their block in Boca Raton. As a matter of fact, every South African I have ever met has been Jewish, due to the fact that there are so many in South Florida.
The Ulghurs in China are Muslim.
Ulghurs are Ulghurs, they are not Chinese.
In China, the Ulghurs are widely considered to be violent and unreasonable. There are 56 ethnic groups in China and the Ulghurs is the only group that refuses peaceful co-existance with the Han Majority.
I was watching her the other day and laughing. She is nothing more than an affirmative action prop installed to counterbalance the evil white man population.
Carol Lin lives for the moment she can trumpet the President's "plummeting poll numbers" every day. She relishes those stories as much as the late Dan Rather relished his W/TANG story. What is her background, anyway?
When I was in high school, I caused a minor uproar by mentioning in Latin class that "it is ironic that, given the long history of Roman settlements in and dealings with, north Africa, that practically nobody there now has ever studied Latin". I thought it was an innocent comment. Anyone with half a brain knows that I was referring of course to the fact that the Islamic countries which displaced the Christian civilization have no use for Latin or Greek, and they speak Arabic.
However, we are dealing with a public school teacher here. I suspect, although she never said so, that I was making some strange racist remark about people nowhere near the area under discussion. All I know is she flew into an uproar and things were tense and I never quite knew why.
