Illegals are a bane that the powers that be just to not recognise.

Used to be in this country, there was a place to go for those who are, at best, semi-skilled labor. Not any more. Mexicans are absolutely taking over all of the low skill jobs that used to be stepping stones for Americans to use to build a better life, or just to earn a decent, though not great, living.

Okay DD I understand about an issue getting worn out, especially when you live it, but we have to keep fighting.

NFN I did a good deal of campaign work in VA and I found that dems and reps were in-sync on the immigration issue. That is how I was able to get the dems to vote for my candidate. We still lost. Until the reps realize that this is a winning issue, they will not force it. Kilgore only halfheartedly promoted his stand against illegal immigration, ran to Bush at the end, and lost big. Had the reps run on a Contract with America style message on illegal immigration, I believe many more of them would have won.

BF don't know about H-5's, but I did not approve of the Senate increasing immigration green cards (selling them) by 350,000 a year. At this point, I would like to see a moratorium to allow assimilation. The entire thing is out of control, but obviously, the illegal side is way out of control.

To follow up my previous post, I'd also have to say that the title of the article posted is absolutely dead on. In addition to destroying jobs for American citizens, our continued insane immigration policy viz mexico is just plain wrong in that it gives mexico zero reason to fix the corrupt kleptocracy that our neighbor to the south has always been. Mexicans are an impoverished, ignorant lot primarily because of official policy on the part of their government.

Anyone who has observed mexican illegals here in this country knows that they are primarily a hardworking God-fearing people with plenty of potential. Mexico has been blessed with a hard-working people, and abundant natural resources. There is no reason that it couldn't join the first world nations of the world, except for the ingrained culture of kleptocracy and corruption maintained by its ruling class.

The United States has facilitated this culture of corruption by not speaking out forcefully against it, and serves as a safety valve for the mexican government that would otherwise have to deal with a restive citizenry if this safety valve didn't otherwise exist. I've come to the conclusion that one of the drivers behind our acceptance of this corruption in our southern neighbor is related to a certain extent from the 'soft bigotry of low expectations'. I really like that phrase, as it is so descriptive of so many things in our society that drives wrong-headed thinking.

We don't expect better out of the mexican government because the 'elite' classes in this country seem to think they aren't capable of better. It's time to implement some tough love to bring the kleptocrats into the 21st century. If we don't we'll continue to pay the price for it.

My best friends wife is an apartment manager here in Indianapolis, and recently was sent to learn Spanish so she could better deal with the large number of Hispanic residents. There are also certain areas here in town where you drive down the street and all you see are business signs in spanish.

I have a Hispanic friend in construction who gripes about the quality of illegals' work.

Thanks for the perspective HF. I assume (obviously) when you say dems and reps were "in-sync" on the immigration issue you mean they both came out in favor of cracking down.

Here's what I think about this. I believe there are several ways we could solve this problem tomorrow; the problem is that both parties have compelling reasons not to do so. The Republicans, like I said, have a cheap labor agenda, and the Dems know that eventually illegal immigration will mean 'cheap' votes.

Both parties know the electorate wants to hear that they are committed to stopping the flow of illegals, but they've calculated that the benefits of continuing to allow the flow of illegals outweighs actually doing anything about it - so they take the pragmatic approach and talk tough and look the other way. Hence the apparent bipartisan state of agreement you described.

You imply that the Republicans haven't realized this is a winning issue. Well, let's face it - it's been simmering just below the surface since 9/11; it's been a huge issue for four years now. I can't believe that the Republicans haven't noticed there's a groundswell of opinion here, and judged that it is indeed a winning issue. I think they have considered running on this issue carefully, and in the final analysis, when they weighed the benefits of allowing illegal immigration against the benefits of the political capital gained by running on a 'cracking down' message -or more correctly actually doing anything about it- they found running on that message lacking. That's the only plausible explanation I can think of.

A quick search will expose Dane as an "open border, cheap immigrant slave labor is good for the US" type.

You are correct about Illegals in the housing industry. A family I know just bought a new home from a large developer who uses lots of Illegals in their construction. Problems with this new home are too numerous to mention but suffice to say, the nerve racking experience of buying a new home was positively nightmarish. The capper was, some of these "good laborers" used my friends new home as their personal flop house. Toilets overflowing -no water on yet- and trash everywhere.

Was this house cheaper than those from other developers in the area who do not use illegal labor? Of course not.

Oh, I'm still fighting but sometimes I need a break from the threads to keep what's left of my sanity. ;^)

Meanwhile, from the south comes the populist Chavez to make siren music to the ears of the Mexican downtrodden.

Fox must engage in verbal warfare to keep the music away.

There are going to be bad problems between Mexico and Venezuela.

Trust me, I would be just as happy doing something else besides straightening out the foul-ups of "Juan y Pedro", but someone has to do it. May as well be me.

I've been doing the same exact thing. Guess we're just "doing the jobs that no illegals will do right".
