Vets Arrested Trying To Remove Peace Display

Five veterans were arrested and taken to jail Thursday night after ignoring police orders not to touch flags planted by an anti-war group.

The five were charged with criminal trespass after they attempted to pull up the 2,000 white flags in Waterville, Maine's Veterans Memorial Park. The flags represented the 2,000 U.S. soldiers killed in the war in Iraq.

The group Waterville Area Bridges for Peace and Justice called the display an important visual reminder of the lives lost.

Waterville Police Chief John Morris, who is a Vietnam veteran himself, said the group had a legal permit to place the flags in the public park.

The veterans said the flags were planted in "sacred ground."

Morris said, "I spoke to them as a veteran and suggested that legitimate veterans' organizations do not resort to civil disobedience to make their point. I warned them, very carefully, that they were not allowed to do destructive behavior on these flags. If they did, we would have to ask them to leave the park. If they refused to leave the park then we'd have to arrest them, and that's what happened."

The five veterans were booked at police headquarters and released after paying $40 to the bail commissioner.

WE fought for was the right for those people to place those flags.

Sorry but that lame excuse went out the window along with the hippies long ago. Code Pink, Cindy Sheehan and the white flag placers you support are one and the same. Sooner or later you are going to have to jump off your fence post to the right or left and take a stand........

Based on your arguments above, I suspect you will be jumping left.

We were told we would more than likely only last the very first few minutes of the conflict before we were all blown to hell.

Yikes! It doesn't sound as if you were ever bored.

Not a hope surviving that. I knew her personally. That sight still haunts my memories. :-(

Being a defender of our country holds some heartbreaks. My father was in WWII and had to shoot a 16 yr old German soldier. In later years he said repeatedly "it was me or the kid". Considering my Dad was only 18 I thought he was a kid too.

People like you make America the ONLY place to live. You're willing to "put it on the line". Thank you!

Back off.

You don't know RA and he doesn't deserve your harassment.

He retracted his comment and is moving on.

It'd be wise that you do the same.

what a horrible thing.

Some of our soldiers are very young but we don't force them as the Germans did twice (14 to 16 my Dad said) or use them as the muslims do. We are an honorable country with a volunteer force to be proud of. And I am.

Do you still serve? Or are you a DoD "suit". :)

It sounds interesting. But I suspect it's a lot like an office anywhere would be.

A veterans park is absolutely hallowed ground.

A few months ago, I was riding my bicycle to work one morning and passed a local Veterans Park (Freedom Hill, Sterling Heights, MI) This park is dedicated mostly to Vietnam Vets with a tank, F-4 and a Huey.

The moving wall was on display that morning so I stopped in to view it and pay homage to those brave men whose names are inscribed on it.

Being there all alone with the fog lifting was amazing. I'm not a vet and know no one who died in Vietnam, but after I left, I had to stop for a few minutes becaus eht eroad got real blurry.

These vets did the right thing.

I was the point on that spear in 82-85. My first battle eposition was 200 yards from the border. We drilled the battle of the Devil;s den till we all knew it in our sleep. I knew the call ins for every jet box for 20 clicks back towards Fulda.

Good Job from from a cold war tanker!
