Finland's Sako recalls rifle cartridges
11.11.2005 at 11:01
Finnish rifle and ammunition maker Sako announced Thursday it was recalling rifle cartridges of the calibre 308 Winchester made between 1990 and 1992.
According to the manufacturer, said the cartridges may have corrosion damage that could cause the cartridge case to fail when firing. Sako says the failure is not likely to break a weapon, but may cause a backward discharge of cordite gases.

Wait a minute! Finland (a place where gun control reigns supreme) is making weapons for sale in other nations?
Hippocrites!

What do you know about gun-control in Finland?

Finnish stuff is of the highest quality. Lapua brass, Scenar bullets, Vihtavuori powders, Sako rifles (try TRG some time). They even managed to accurize AK47 design in their Valmet without affecting reliability. But why would they be bothered about powder gases escape? Rifle bolt would block these from causing mechanical damage. If they get cartridge case separation, then yes, pulling the remnants of the case out will be a hassle, and undesirable during, say, a hunt.

"What do you know about gun-control in Finland?"Gun control must be really bad there from lack of practice. They can't use 'em much if they've got unused, 15-13 year-old ammunition lying around.

I can't believe they were still using cordite at that time.

I'm sure they weren't using cordite, it was probably the 'FinnTranslator 1000' software that supplied that term. Either that, or the clueless reporter had to look in an old encyclopedia for what cartridges are made of.
BTW one of my favorite old rifles is from Finland, it's a Valmet M39 made from an old Moisin Nagant action. It's like new and built like a tank. I have no doubt that it can function well in below zero temperatures, and it hits what it aims at. Here's a book review about them.

Do some research on the history of Finland over the last century or so. They devastated the invading Russian army, which out of 1,500,000 men lost a million of them.
Gun control in Finland must mean one shot, one kill.

A fifteen year old cartridge might misfire? Say it ain't so.

Finland actually
wants sportsmen to put sound suppressors on their weapons to cut down on noise pollution.
No $200 tax and registration for a $15 can there.

15 years isn't that old. The US army is still using .50 caliber rounds from WWII.

My son has a Russian M44 with a not-so-good bore. It's a blast to shoot, but it isn't accurate. I've heard the Polish M44s were the best.
The M39 can shoot much better than my eyes can, even with old crappy ammo.

If I may ask, where did you get the unissued Polish M44s, and are there any more?

One came from FFL buddy who had it in his collection before he liquidated and another from an estate via another FFL friend. They are hard to find but worth it as the best.
Hope you can locate one,
