Revealed: UK wartime torture camp [WW II]
The Guardian (UK) ^ | November 12, 2005 | by Ian Cobain

The British government operated a secret torture centre during the second world war to extract information and confessions from German prisoners, according to official papers which have been unearthed by the Guardian.

More than 3,000 prisoners passed through the centre, where many were systematically beaten, deprived of sleep, forced to stand still for more than 24 hours at a time and threatened with execution or unnecessary surgery.

Some are also alleged to have been starved and subjected to extremes of temperature in specially built showers, while others later complained that they had been threatened with electric shock torture or menaced by interrogators brandishing red-hot pokers.

They tortured some Nazis in order to help win the war?
Good.

I write a throw away line on an FR thread and you accuse me of having no sympathies for the civilians killed by Nazi bombers.

I didn't accuse you of having NO sympathies for Nazi victims. I tsk-tsk'ed about you not having the SAME degree of sympathy. In the posts I've read, you seemed to be unduly critical of the Allies, while minimizing the offenses of the enemy.

I suppose you also think Noel Coward was actually asking his fellow Brits to be nice to the Germans.

No, but Noel Coward was witty.

As a born and bred ex-New Yorker I learned not to respond -- ever -- to raving street corner nutters. I'm still learning that FR contains similar people. Thanks for the reminder.

Hmmmm. This has declined to the point of name-calling, eh? Well, let me be the adult here and point out the bones of my contention:

Great Britain and France declared war on Germany
The total number of British civilians killed by German Bombing was a tiny fraction of the number of German civilians killed by allied bombing.
Since the Allies were unaware of this at the time, it can not be used as a justification.
Bomber Harris and his RAF and the US Army Air Corps dumped tonnes of HE on German cities.

All are quotes from your posts. The pattern they evince is one of sympathy for the Nazis. Besides being wrong on a couple of historical matters, your thesis reeks of moral equivalency. I was simply noting that proclivity.

If that makes me a street-corner nutter, it's a label I wear proudly. Now, let's talk about YOUR problem ...

It was so much better as delivered by Noel, dressed in white tie, smoking a cigarette, oh so sophisticated ... as Bomber Harris and his RAF and the US Army Air Corps dumped tonnes of HE on German cities.

Memories!

No memories for me. I just thought it was extremely clever, and it relates very much to our current situation with the Muslims. Maybe Doug from Upland could rework it. :)
