Bush Fights Back !! [William Kristol]
The Weekly Standard ^ | Nov 12, 2005 | William Kristol

Posted on 11/12/2005 3:05:42 AM PST by The Raven

ON VETERANS' DAY, the president fought back. In a major speech Friday at Tobyhanna Army Depot in Pennsylvania, President Bush defended the war in Iraq. Most notably, he defended the probity and honesty with which his administration made the case for the war to remove Saddam. At last, the president confronted the slander that he "lied us into war"--a slander propagated by his opponents with amazing success.

Here is the key passage in Bush's speech:

While it's perfectly legitimate to criticize my decision or the conduct of the war, it is deeply irresponsible to rewrite the history of how that war began. Some Democrats and antiwar critics are now claiming we manipulated the intelligence and misled the American people about why we went to war. These critics are fully aware that a bipartisan Senate investigation found no evidence of political pressure to change the intelligence community's judgments related to Iraq's weapons programs. They also know that intelligence agencies from around the world agreed with our assessment of Saddam Hussein. They know the United Nations passed more than a dozen resolutions citing his development and possession of weapons of mass destruction. And many of these critics supported my opponent during the last election, who explained his position to support the resolution in the Congress this way: 'When I vote to give the president of the United States the authority to use force, if necessary, to disarm Saddam Hussein, it is because I believe that a deadly arsenal of weapons of mass destruction in his

hands is a threat and a grave threat to our security.' That's why more than a hundred Democrats in the House and the Senate, who had access to the same intelligence, voted to support removing Saddam Hussein from power.

It's a shame the president even had to address this. That is what his staff, the RNC, and the republican senators and congressmen should have been doing. Instead, they left this on his already overburdened shoulders.

But Kennedy--and his colleagues like Sen. Harry Reid--do not really want to follow the logic of their accusations. They would rather just damage the president--and the country's foreign policy--and enjoy the political effect.

Two of the most irresponsible politicians ever and totally anti-American. These Socialists would rather see the enemy win the WOT than support their country and their Military. Utterly Useful Idiots!

They have the advantage that the facts are on their side. -- the Democratic charge that Bush lied us into war is itself a lie.

I'm telling my lib aquaintances to use the windfall oil money they got from Saddaam to lower gas prices instead.

Unfortunately we have a lot of gutless wonders in the Republican party these days. And where are people like Alan Keyes, does he only surface during elections?

Huh? He goes to bed every night at 9 or 10 pm.

That is what his staff, the RNC, and the republican senators and congressmen should have been doing.

They aren't doing their job. He should fire them and get somone who will.

Bush is not a fighter. He wants to compromise and talk. We need a fighter who won't take any crap. Bush has been like France. He has tried to appease (compassionate conservatism) rather than fight for conservative beliefs. It has always been perceived as a weakness. Now the fires are burning and he trying to act tough.

You know we all got behind him on 9/11. "Whatever it takes". We need to stay the course with him Whatever it takes. If we don't you know the left won't and we will lose this war and the consequences of that are simply unacceptable.

The sequence of events, and the partisan response of the Democrats needs to be kept in mind because of their mission to destroy our President.

After 9/11 the Democrats were agitating for something to be done.

The Taliban was given a chance to give up the terrorists and the leadership of Al Qaeda. The Taliban refused. Afghanistan was invaded in March 2002. It didn't take long for the jackass Democrats and the jackass MSM to chirp together "We're in a quagmire. And why are we in Afghanistan when Saddam Hussein is more dangerous." And this is key: In 2002 the Democrats and the MSM produced numerous statements, speeches, and articles about how dangerous Saddam Hussein was, and there was a lot of "knowing" assurances that he did in fact possess WMDs. We know now, that all of their assertions were "political" in nature. This wasn't genuine concern for the security of the United States and its people, but rather, a thinly disguised coordinated partisan Democrat/MSM attack on President Bush. It was nothing more than cynical grandstanding to make themselves look concerned while putting political pressure on President Bush to "do something." (We know this because, as repeated shortly, they are now ignoring their own comments.) They were trying to portray the President as weak and indecisive. Yes, bravely they thundered about the dangerous Saddam Hussein.

President Bush gave Saddam Hussein the opportunity to cooperate with U.N. Inspectors and to leave Iraq. Hussein refused, and in March 2003, the U.S. invaded Iraq.

Not long after the invasion, the jackass Democrats and the jackass MSM chirped together, "We're in a quagmire. Why are we going after Saddam Hussein. North Korea is much more dangerous."

And now, in a concerted political/partisan effort to damage the President, in a time of war, the jackass MSM and the jackass Democrats are trying to re-write history. They have shamelessly used the deaths of our beloved military personnel to attack President Bush politically, and they are publicly ignoring their own speeches and articles about Saddam Hussein and his threat to peace and his possession of WMDs and his ability to have WMDs produced. Long before Joe Wilson pulled off his Niger nonsense, the Democrats were saying that Saddam Hussein was capable of producing a nuclear weapon. (Last night Krauthammer made a brilliant point on FOX. He reminded Juan Williams that President Clinton launched missiles against Iraq to destroy WMDs. Again, where were the accusations of faulty intelligence then? Where were the accusations of "manipulated intelligence"?)

There is a word for what the Democrats and their cooperative weasels in the MSM are doing in a time of war:

TREASON

It's a shame the president even had to address this.

That is true. The fact that this speech was necessary -- and in fact, long overdue -- is simply another exhibit in the corruption of the MSM. The "Bush lied" campaign is a pure blood libel launched and propagated by the senior leadership of the democrat party. The accusation is known to be a lie by those who make it, and by the press. But they merchandise it anyhow.

A Republican who engaged in anything this openly dishonest would be ridden out of town on a rail. The dems wallow in it because they know the MSM will cover. This is true on many issues -- Social Security, education, health care reform, tax reform -- and it means Republicans have to swim upstream when it comes to framing issues. This is a big part of the RINO problem, by the way; some of the RINOs would be liberals under any circumstances, but very often a RINO is simply an ordinary pol who lacks the skill, courage, energy, and temperment to do battle with his local press hour by hour, day by day.

This is one of the two great asymmetries of American politics. The other is the use of compulsory union dues in politics. We just got another object lesson, as if one were needed, in California, where the unions spent Arnold's perfectly sensible propositions into oblivion. What the MSM shills report is how low Arnold's popularity ratings have dropped. What they don't report is that this is the result of a year-long barrage of union-funded negative advertising, paid for by compulsory dues money.

I recently heard Leahy bragging that his was the final vote to cut off funding for the Viet Nam war.

Keep that in mind when you bash the President. You give comfort to slime like Kennedy, Kerry, and Leahy and break the hearts of real Americans.

I wish the administration (or someone) would also quote what Dimm politicians, including Clinton, had to say about Saddam and his weapons back in 1998 - 2000.

Quotes from these years would smack down the Dimm/MSM mantra that intelligence was "manipulated".

Mr. President,
Your speech yesterday was long overdue, and taking the Democrats to task was refreshing to hear.Your advisors have not had your best interests at heart and your fellow Republicans in the House and Senate have let you, and us, down. The left has had nightly newscasts, press conferences, newspaper editorials, and numerous speeches in which they called you a liar, a cheat, and even a dictator. Why have you been silent, and why have you allowed this to go on?
Mr. President, my heros have always been cowboys, and it is past time for you to become one again. It is time for some "Presidential asskicking", and I suggest you start with the Senate. Messers. Reid, Kennedy, Schumer and Leahy are long overdue for a swift boot in their ass from you, and I relish the thought of your opening a can of whup-ass on them. You are our President, please start being one again, and soon. If someone inferred that I lied, his teeth would be hurting. You have been challenged to a figurative duel with these fellows, and now it is your turn. Use your power and clean the floor with those varmits. I truly look forward to the fight and only wish you the best.

Huh? He goes to bed every night at 9 or 10 pm.

Brilliant observation, and a key indicator why you will never have anyone you approve of anywhere close to the Whitehouse.

I guess you missed little things like the hurricanes that wiped out a swath of the US as big as the British Isles, I guess you didn't notice that we're fighting a war on terror is over sixty countries (did you really think we're only in Iraq and Afghanistan?) I guess you didn't notice that we haven't had a major strike in the US since 9-11, perhaps you think that is just a happy coincidence. Perhaps you didn't notice that our media is acting like a fifth column within this country to undermine it's national security. I guess you think the whole UN thing coming to light is just mere chance. I guess you think North Korea and Iran are just pesky little problems that could be handled by anyone (gee, that's just what Clinton thought and look where we are today! You have a lot in common with him).

Life must be so easy in your little world.

When you get up at 5 and are in your office at 7, going to bed at 9 or 10 is reasonable.
