No, in the case of Clinton, the impeachment hearings were held during the first half of his second term, not the second half. If the Dims win the House in 2006, they'd have to organize the thing, then hold the hearings, so my guess is, if they could pull together enough votes, impeachment wouldn't happen before April or May, probably much later. That would leave at most 17 months before the next national election. That's a lot less time than in the Clinton case.
It's arguable, but I really think one factor in the Republican Senate's decision to not have a real trial was the idea that Gore would be in the top spot for that many months, and that would enable him to win the upcoming election.

Mapes was on Neil Cavuto today and was very combative. Neil didn't fight back hard, like thought he would.

"I mean, how many soldiers took to the field without a magazine in their M16? For that matter, how many soldiers assigned as Public Affairs Officers go into the field?" Note the position of the select-fire switch... :) he's darn lucky they didn't give him a magazine.

I saw her on Billy Two-Times's show last night and on Cavuto today. I think the only relevant question is whether she's simply deeply neurotic, or has she crossed the line into psychosis?

Emily Will's link is certainly interesting. Mapes has a lot of gall to think that she wouldn't weigh in on this again, especially when her book misrepresents her interactions with Will. Will's link includes some great examples of why she questioned the colonel's signature. You don't have to be a document examiner to see the signature is almost certainly forged.

He almost did. If he'd been the incumbent, he surely would have (barring an absolute disaster).

I didn't notice that. I am not very familiar with the M16. Shot one once, about twenty rounds, over fifteen years ago. I take it the select-fire switch is not on 'safety.' That leaves 'semi-auto' or 'full-auto' doesn't it? Or does it have 'three round burst' as well? I do know that it could still have 'one in the tube' even without a magazine. Probably not enough to seriesly damage his wooden head though. ;^)

This goes back to the BOR interview with Michael Moore. That's where I came to understand that liberalism really is a mental disorder.
Moore stated, beyond a shadow of a doubt that there was no difference between being wrong and lying. He stated that, flat out, and when BOR tried over and over again to get him to restate his assertion, Moore absolutely refused, and asserted again and again, that there is no difference between being wrong and telling a lie.
Since there is nothing wrong with being wrong (as long as you try to find the correct answer), and being wrong is the same as telling an intentional lie, according to leftists, there's nothing wrong with lying.

I saw her on BOR last night and she appeared to be on drugs to me. The underlying pathology would be masked by that.
(By the Mapes Standard that is not a slanderous opinion it is a virtual certainty. I am very sure I am right.)

Let's stipulate that Dubya's folks used pull to get him into the National Guard instead of Vietnam. So? Even at that, an argument could be made in pointing out that Bush joined a unit which had people who were rotating into Vietnam when he joined it, whilst Kerry volunteered for a group that wasn't. that it changed after they signed up isn't a sign of their intent.

Moore absolutely refused, and asserted again and again, that there is no difference between being wrong and telling a lie.The statement below this one is a lie.
The statement above this one is true.
The two statements above this one are the basic programming of the liberal brain.

An excerpt from
Dan Rather's Disgraced Cohort On Book Tour from
Accuarcy in Media (AIM) by Cliff Kincaid and Roger Aronoff
On the other hand, it (the panel that investigated Rathergate, headed by Richard Thornburgh and Louis Boccardi,...) did find that Mapes knew that, contrary to her report, George W. Bush offered to go to Vietnam while in the National Guard unit. This was a critical fact, undermining the entire premise of the CBS News story that Bush went into the National Guard to avoid Vietnam.

I watched a couple of minutes of her on Chris Matthews' program on MSNBC. He asked her why the key document wasn't reproduced in the book and she went into an explanation of how some other documents were in there. The people who claimed the document was a fake were wrong because they were just looking at a faxed copy, whereas she had the original. At least that what she seemed to be saying.
I guess faxing it could cause the spacing to change. That and the fact that copies had been sent around on the internet.

What is it you people?!
She is NOT some poor little deluded lamb, who made an honest mistake and still can't accept reality. Poor little dear.
Read her answers. She's a hard core left-wing political operative - who got caught. She's a G*D***M liar who tried to bring down President Bush with FORGED documents and the help of the Kerry Campaign.
Now with the help of the MSM, she's trying to sell her book for money and rehabilitate her reputation so she can get her another Media job, probably at NPR.
She'll keep lying and so will her buddies. In 5 years the MSM will be talking about how she put on a "controversial" hard- hitting documentary that was disputed by some right-wingers.

It's a rhetorical slight-of-hand which hucksters and preachers have long made use of: just keep saying that you opinion is The Truth (not just the truth but The Truth), and declare it loudly before you have even laid down your arguments and evidence, and enough people will believe you.
To: B Knotts
Here's my take on things. Mapes is damaged goods, as far as the media is concerned. She's desperate to regain her credibility, but no legitimate news operation is going to touch her. The only reason that WP and Larry King and the other liberal maroons are willing to interview her is that she's controversial, she opposes the Bush Administration, and regardless of the fact that she's a whackjob, she will probably drive some ratings from their liberal audience. I think, in her own heart, she realizes that the documents are forgeries but, like most liberals, the facts don't matter as much as intentions. Ultimately, liberals will decide upon their own version of the truth (even if it diverges completely from reality), and I think that she will get a pass from them after she's served some time in purgatory. Think of it this way. David Brock was one of Clinton's biggest antagonists throughout his presidency but, after he became a pariah among his "friends" in the media, he moved over to the Dark Side, confessed that being a Conservative is evil, blah, blah, blah, and they forgave him. I suspect that a similar kind of ritual cleansing is in the offing for Mary Mapes. Eventually, the libs in the media will accept her version as fact as an outgrowth of what they consider "conventional wisdom"; basically, a garbage can full of their own bogus ideology, hopes, and dreams...
