Some of the people who attacked me and CBS acted, sadly, like 14 year old boys who had broken into their parents' liquor cabinet.

More like CBS acted like 14 year olds. (No offense to 14 year olds.)

I have followed up on the story and actually have obtained a new cache of duments from the Texas Air National Guard archives in Austin Texas.

Bill Burkett's been busy.

The other bit of evidence is a new exhaustive analysis that shows through wer [sic] on the letters that therse memos were types [sic] not laser printed.

The "wer" on the letters is exactly the sort of thing (resolution reduction turning smooth lines choppy, random speckling) that would be expected from several generations of faxing and copying.

Proportional spacing was developed int eh 1940s and fine tuned in the 50s. The Texas National Guard had many machines capable of it in 1972.

In a regular duty officer's office? In a state of user-friendly development that someone would use it for a memo that didn't need to be prettily formatted?

I do still talk to him [Dan Rather]. I consider him a friend. I think his resigning woould [sic] be a loss for reporting in this country at a time when we need good reporters.

Huh? I thought Dan Rather's decision to resign is past history, water under the bridge (as Ted Kennedy would say), not something he is still contemplating.

Bellaire, Tex.: The scientific method requires that one formulate a hypothesis and then attempt to prove that hypothesis false. If unable to do so, it is taken as truth. Do you feel the scientific method is applicable to investigative journalism? If not, why?
Mary Mapes: That's an interesting concept. I have never thought of investigative reportng in that way.

Obviously not.

Criticism is all American. Anonymous name calling is not.

So, if you do get back into journalism, you are going to foreswear the use of anonymous sources who say unkind things about the subject of your story?

Other than trying to sell a book, I don't understand the point. This is not an impeachable offense. But even if the Dims could provide enough deception to make it seem so, what could they do?

President Bush has been re-elected, and currently has a Republican majority in both chambers. Even if the Dims managed majority in both chambers in 2006, I doubt there were be enough pressure to take on the long impeachment hearings, with only two years left in his administration.

Would the Dims really want to do that? The result could manage to put the 2008 GOP nominee in the WH for a year or so. There are a couple or three ways that could be accomplished, if the Republicans wanted to go there.

All Ms Mapes has to do is call Bill Burkett and have him get hold of the person who knows the person who knows the person who knows the person who has the original document

Unfortunately, it turned out that the person who knows the person who knows the person who knows the person says that this person has been abducted by space aliens.

I can not tell you how embarrassingly horrible that entire statement is. She can not even fathom why this would be a problem, but once caught wishes she hadn't done it.

Frightening.

My mother was a lifelong Republican who died while planning to vote for George W. Bush. I would give the world to have had a chance to drive her to the polls.

Bwahahaha! It's the "why some of my best friends are____________" defense. Bwahahahaha!

Stop questioning my patriotism!

Hey Mary, I heard you were a child molester. Where? Some documents on the internet. Oh those documents are forged? I still think you are a child molester. Prove to me that the documents are forged.

This wouldn't even be a story if Mary Mapes had had a story to begin with. THEY DROPPED THE STORY. Why anyone is even paying any attention to this lunatic is beyond me.

bullying political partisans to club peopleover the head because they pereive bias.

She says this sort of thing only when referring to the right. It shows exactly where her own politics lie, and it's not on some platform in the objective middle. She can't see the forest because she's a tree.

I think it's clear that Mapes was personally invested in this story and can't let it go. People like this not only cannot accept the facts, but they remain convinced that the story is far more important than it ever actually was, because this is the only way they can continue to justify their obsession with it. Even if the documents had been real (or even forged more successfully so that we would not have been able to debunk them), this story would not have sunk George W. Bush. But she obviously thinks it would have.

And there is no doubt in my mind that the Kerry campaign was behind the whole story, just like it was behind Joe Wilson's fabrications and the invention of the White House leak story. These guys were very, very good at selling bullshit stories to a gullible, Bush-hating media. They had an entire PR campaign in the can ready to go the day after that 60 Minutes story aired. Either they just used Mary Mapes or she was part of the whole plot. If she was used, the Kerry people knew they could use her because she had been digging on the story for years and hated Bush. Either way she was biased and abused her power to get this story on the air.

I never have understood what the signifance of this story would have been, if proved. As I remember, all young men had to figure out and factor in the Vietnam war draft and considered and used every angle at this disposal.

That said, Mapes looks terrible. She is angry and resentful. by contrast Judy Miller is handling herself very well.

Burkett burned the originals after copying them, or so I thought Burkett said.

Wow, just....wow.

What we are seeing here is the Left's version of snake handling, faith healing religious fundamentalism. Like the extreme religious fundies, Mapes wants to believe this story so badly that she has wilfully suspended all reason.

I don't know who she intended that to refer to, but it sounds like an awfully good description of her own behavior.

WHO CARES! I thought that Bill Clinton established that what happened 20 years ago isn't news and doesn't matter -- not illegal land deals, not illegal kickbacks via the commodity market, not draft dodging, not sexual harassment, not even rape! What Mapes needs to be asked is why this story even mattered.

In New Jersey, we just elected a governor that not only gifted over $400,000 to the head of the state's largest labor union but also gave her a bracelet worth more than $100,000 and apparently payed her taxes on them, too. No, no story there. But Bush's 30 year old TANG records rate a 60 minutes treatment. Morons.

Unfortunately the person who knows the person who knows the person who has the original document died in a freak accident falling down an elevator shaft, the person who knows the person who has the original document is on life support in a coma due to a totally random and unrelated mugging, and the person who found the original document just died in a small plane crash.

But it's real I tell ya, it's real!
