Sometimes public schools get it right
Posted on 11/10/2005 1:59:20 PM PST by pjd
My daughter attends public school in Berkley, Michigan. Today, she came home today with a U.S. Marines T-shirt. She won it in her Social Studies class.
'How did that happen?' I asked.
She expalined that they had a special guest in their class today. It was her teacher's brother who is a Marine Sgt. with 9 years in the Core. I think he was there to commerate the 230 birthday today of the Marines. His main topic was about 'What's REALLY going on in Iraq.'
He started off by saying something like, 'I don't want to tell you that the news is lying to you about Iraq...but they are. Let me tell you what's really going on..."
She said he presented a very strong case for why we should be there. She said he also put the 2000 casualties figure into perspective. Of course every casualty is a tragedy and it is 2000 more than we would like. But he compared it to the number of deaths during the first hour of the D-Day invasion, about 10,000. Also how it is on par with peace-time casualties in the military.
I can't tell you much more, because I wasn't there, but I thought you all would be interested and pleased to see something like this in a local public school.

Not if it is a 24 hour clock as some are! Beautiful Story and Just think of How Many Classrooms would have banned this National Hero, the Marine from speaking the Truth!

My 9 year old told me they had a guest speaker today in class. He was a retired Marine colonel with 30 years of service. He said the class really enjoyed it.

To ad to this. I filled out a form for veterans given to me by my 1st grader grandson. I got a call to day to attend a school Assembly they were having for Veterans Day. It was very heartwarming, I sat next to a Vet from WW 2(maybe I can get him in my Documentary about vets coming home).
Frist the recited the pledge of alegence (Still with the ";under God";. the each grade got up and sang each branch of the military anthem. then a student got up and read about each branch. Then a teacher read the well known bit that starts out:
"It is the Veterans, not the pastor who has given us freedom of religion.
It is the Veteran, not the reporter who has given us freedom of the press....and so on."
This was then put in the form of a certificate and given out to us Vets.
Then we were invited to the stage to introduce our selves, very nice.
This in Seattle yet.

I like the saying:
"If you can read this, thank a teacher. If you're reading it in English, thank a veteran."
