Filmmaker's daughter dies in Jordan blasts

AMMAN, Jordan, Nov. 10 (UPI) -- A daughter of a prominent Syrian filmmaker was among those killed in Wednesday's triple bomb attacks in Jordanian hotels, officials said Thursday.

Medical and government officials confirmed that Rima Akkad, 33, died of her injuries late Wednesday.

Her father, renown international filmmaker Mustafa Akkad, was seriously injured in the neck, but was reported in stable condition.

The two were at the Hyatt Hotel in Amman when a bomb ripped through the lobby as two other explosions rocked the nearby Radisson SAS Hotel and the 3-star Days Inn Hotel.

Akkad directed the 1977 "The Message" on the life of Prophet Mohammad, which starred Anthony Quinn and Lauren Papas.

He is known for his film, "Omar al-Mukhtar, Lion of the Desert," about a Libyan leader who fought the Italian occupation of the north African Arab country.

He is also responsible for the horror Halloween blockbuster movies.

Sources close to Akkad, 68, said he and his daughter were in Jordan to attend a wedding celebration in the Red Sea resort city of Aqaba on Friday.

They said his daughter had just arrived from Beirut to meet him and were in the lobby when the explosion detonated.

Officials said at least 57 people, mostly Jordanians, were killed in the triple attack, and more than 100 others were injured.

Medical and government officials said foreign casualties also included Iraqis, Palestinians, Bahrainis, Saudis, Americans, Swiss, Germans, Indonesians, Chinese, Koreans, and one Israeli Arab.

Security officials suspected al-Qaida affiliated suicide attackers carried out the explosions, the first of their kind in the high-security Arab kingdom.

Most of the dead and injured may be Muslims, but al-Qaida announced the targets were Jews and 'crusaders', for which read: infidels, westerners, Americans.

The movie about Mohammed has never been shown in movie theaters because of threats by the Islamaniacs.

I have to add that critical studies of the Bible have been written by apostate Christians who agenda is to discredit the authority of the Church. Rationalist westerners are inclined to accept the Muslims at their word because Islam has few supernatural elements. The Mohammed of conventional history is more like Joshua than Jesus. In a way he reminds me of the kind of Messiah whom the Jewish Zealots expected: a warrior-king who would subdue the earth.

There are no Christians doing what the Islamaniacs are doing and even if there were their actions totally contradict the teachings of Jesus.

On the other hand the Mohammedan killers are following precisely in the line of their "Prophet". He was as bloodthirsty a maniac who ever lived and was directly responsible for the deaths of thousands upon thousands of those who would not accept his false religion. In fact his death came as a result of poisoning by a Jewish woman whose father he had killed and who he was raping. This is one of the reasons Jews are hated so much by the Mohammedans.

His followers destroyed the Christian Middle East, looting, killing, enslaving and raping their way from Mecca throughout N. Africa all the way into Europe. They killed millions merely because they refused to bow down to Mad Mo.

Their treachery and bloodthirstiness knew no bounds. There is NOTHING similiar in Christianity.

I will have to take a look. BTW, I am reminded that westerners who are so skeptical of the Bible and the "historical Jesus" have little interest in the "historical Mohammed." Almost nothing of what we know about him is based on non-Islamic sources. They simply accepts as true all that the Muslims says about him. But even the earliest versions of the Koran were assembled a full generation after his death, the first history written almost two generations later.

In light of all the so-called documentaries on Jesus, you bring up an interesting point.

Thanks to The DaVinci Code, National Geographic, The History Channel, etc., have all been doing their own shows on Jesus, His existence, archeological evidence and rumors. They're completely unafraid to explore outlandish speculations and take Scripture out of context but completely IGNORE the life and times of Mohammad. I don't think Muslims would want their so-called prophet's treatment of his adopted son and daughter-in-law brought to light, not to mention other aspects of his conduct while living.

It's not as if Christians will threaten to cut their heads off...

No, that's why he hooked up with people like Akkad to produce his films. Back when Hollywood did slightly original stuff that was how people entered the business, a young up and coming director found himself a not so young slightly rich wannabe producer, they put a package together and found a distributor and off you went. I've seen interviews with Akkad seems like a cool guy, kept finding a way to stick Donald Pleasence in the Halloween movies until Donald died, even when Pleasence was getting old and fairly infirmed Akkad said he'd earned a place in any movie Akkad produced that he wanted to be in.

Have you read those quotes??? They are for a specific time and place unlike the koran. There is no unending until the world is conquered order in the Bible for murdering all non-Jews in the Old Testament or non-Christians in the New Testament.

What do you think the sword when found on islamic coutries flags means??

Well, John Carpenter has produced some of the most astonishing movies whether he bought his way in or not. I won't hold his wealth against him since he has shared some of his vision with us. Even if he wasn't the author, he saw some good stuff.

Its just a symbol, like we have an eagle. You give them too much credit. They live in the dark ages, that is why all the wealthy and/or intelligent ones move here.

I know many muslim doctors and small business owners. They love this country and are happy to be able to live in freedom. They hate the fundamentalist nutbags over there, thats why they left.

Try studying just a little, yes it is just a symbol but it has a huge meaning which every muslim knows.

They have surely shown how much they hate the true followers of the religion......I saw so many of them protesting the evil done in their name after 9-11.

Get a clue.

Yeah once he actually made some bucks he got into the production side, makes it easier to get the movie you want out, it's hard for the producer to make cuts the director and writer disagree with when they're all the same guy. Eveybody in Hollywood bought they're way in, that's how the place work, I don't hold it against anybody. I've got a lot of respect for Carpenter, good director, good writer, fun guy, seems pretty well grounded. Probably the most enjoyable commentary track I've ever listened to was Big Trouble in Little China, apparently he and Russell hadn't seen each other in a while so they spend most of the movie chatting about their families and reminiscing about their various projects together, almost no insight into the movie itself but it sure was fun (at least I'm pretty sure it was BTILC, might have been The Thing or Escape from New York, I got on a Carpenter and Russell kick and watched all 3 in one week).

I used to watch the movies. Rented all the tapes I could stand, sci-fi and horror mostly. The ones that stood out, different, joking, mocking, actual fun, were Carpenter's as often as not. Can't remember any titles offhand; haven't watched a movie in years.

Movies are my constant companion, I wear out DVD players like marathon runner wear out shoes. Carpenter has a very unique style, there's a certain off kilter sense of humor in his stuff.
