WASHINGTON - The increase in the number of people without health insurance has occurred largely because of illegal immigration, a study found.
Researchers at the RAND Corporation, a nonpartisan think tank, analyzed data received from about 2,400 people in Los Angeles County in 2000 and 2001, and applied that information to the nation's undocumented population at large.
The number of uninsured adults in the United States grew by about 8.7 million between 1980 and 2000. If the trend for Los Angeles County held true for the rest of the country, about a third of that growth can be attributable to illegal immigrants.
The study does not diminish the severity of the problem of the uninsured. Nor does it call for some sort of health insurance coverage for illegals.
"That's where I don't go," said James Smith, a senior economist at RAND. "That's not a scientific question."
Rather, the study shows that any meaningful impact on reducing the number of uninsured has to take into account the issue of illegal immigration, he said.
"There are pros and cons of providing insurance to the undocumented that should be debated openly," he said. "Undocumented immigrants make up too much of the issue to be ignored or hidden by polite silence."
The study also indicates that, since the number of illegal immigrants is growing rapidly, "we can expect that the uninsured population is going to grow rapidly as well," said another study co-author, Neeraj Sood.
The researchers said about one in five illegal immigrant adults have some health insurance coverage through their work, but virtually none of them purchase it on their own. Also, they rarely make use of public insurance through programs such as Medicaid.
The study was published in the journal Health Affairs.

Here in AZ, 4 out of 10 drivers have no insurance. I'm willing to bet 90% of the time, they are illegals. I know several people who were hit by an illegal with no insurance, and had to take a hit on their own insurance.
It is just sad.

I've been saying this for years - everytime I hear someone say "40 million uninsured Americans" I say, "most of them aren't Americans..."
That resulting price increase is a large component of why so many American citizens go uninsured.
I know good Americans who have been laid off, who have no health insurance. But if they were illegals, they could go to the PA welfare office and get 200 bucks rights away just because they're illegals.

Contrary to the beliefs of some, illegal immigrants come here to work, not to mooch off government benefits. The sooner this debate is settled the better, and even if it were true, this would be a problem of socialism, not of immigration.

A man waiting to be treated at Mass General said to the nurse at the desk that he should just say he's an Illegal Alien and get treated for free like the crowd in the ER he was in. A Social Worker ran out of her office after overhearing him and told him "It is Illegal in Massachusetts to impersonate an Undocumented Immigrant." I bet A.G. Tom Reilly would enforce that law.
By flooding the market with an infinite supply of cheap labor, employers are relieved of the need to compete to hire or retain good employees. A lot of jobs that in the past would have included health benefits no longer do because the employers feel no need to incur this expense. As a result less citizens have insurance.
From 2000 to 2004, 2.4 million Mexicans immigrated into the United States, 85% illegally.
We need to consider that our welfare state subsidizes and encourages illegal immigration and distorts social behavior in the fact that any illegal woman giving birth here produces a welfare-qualifying U.S. citizen. Fertility rates among Mexican immigrant women are 40% higher than among women in Mexico.
