Michigan's Attorney General Comes Clean About Affair

Mike Cox Said Indiscretion Happened Years Ago

POSTED: 2:51 pm EST November 9, 2005

LANSING, Mich. -- Attorney General Mike Cox on Wednesday acknowledged having an affair a number of years ago and accused an associate of trial lawyer Geoffrey Fieger of threatening to expose the indiscretion.

Fieger, who won the 1998 Democratic nomination for governor after becoming famous as the attorney for assisted suicide advocate Jack Kevorkian, has said he wants to challenge Cox, a Republican, in the 2006 election.

Fieger said the person Cox is accusing is not an associate of his.

Cox said he came clean publicly because an associate of Fieger threatened to expose the affair if Cox didn't stop investigating Fieger.

Cox said he told his wife Laura about the affair more than two years ago. The couple went to counseling, and the affair is now "old news" in his family, he said.

"What I did was inexcusable," Cox said in prepared comments. "I am completely responsible for what happened -- it was entirely my fault."

Since March, Cox's office has been investigating a $450,000 television ad campaign that urged viewers to "vote no" against Justice Stephen Markman in last year's Supreme Court race. Markman easily won re-election. But it was not until June -- seven months after the election -- that Fieger, a multimillionaire, filed papers in Oakland County acknowledging he paid for the anti-Markman ads.

Fieger said Cox's allegations Wednesday were "amazingly sick."

"Something sounds absolutely insane about what's going on here," Fieger told The Associated Press in a telephone interview. "How could the attorney general have so many skeletons in his closet that he could be blackmailed? Why is he subjecting his wife to this humiliation?"

What went on in his marriage is he and his wife's business and no one else's.

If his wife worked through it evidentally she knows a little more of his true character than you do.

Did he or did he not make a public vow when he got married that he would be faithful to his wife?

I have no respect for people who cheat on their spouses.

As far as I'm concerned He deserves to be publicly humiliated.

I was far more concerned with Clinton's politics than his bedroom. Go figure.

In regard to a Fieger, I would be willing to accept it if Cox had ten affairs over accepting Fieger as he is...

Character counts? Chop Fuey!! What kinda Character would pull extortion??

It has been said that if you will lie to your spouse, the person you are closest to and vowed never to dishonor... who else will you lie to? Doesn't every other person come in second? Your boss, your coworkers, your friends, etc. And, if you will lie about adultery, a "big sin"... what minor indescrestions will you lie about to others?

This is by far the most sanctimonious forum on the web. How is it your business what goes on in a person's marriage if it doesn't directly involve their governing? His wife, the one who was actually harmed here, not you, worked through it with him. Amazing that you could be more hurt than she is.

If you want me to answer a question, you might try asking one first.

Then you must want to purge all references to Bill and Monica from FR

The minority of posts at that time on FR were in reference to Bill and Hill's marriage.

What goes on in the White House is every American's business. Mr. Clinton doesn't get the luxury of hiding behind his marriage vows to avoid scrutiny on that count.

If he hadn't decided to pursue his prey in the White House then you'd be right.

You probably will not understand this but it shows the individual's character.

Someone who cheats on their spouse is, by their own mouth, a liar, and an oath breaker. And should not be trusted. Not only that, they have no honor.

I realize that things such as honor and good character no longer matter in this society to many individuals.

Go get a copy of a marriage ceremony. Read it and see what each party promises to do.

So is Fieger trying to insinuate that Cox has MORE for which to be blackmailed besides the infidelity? Sounds like calumny, unless Fieger has some proof of his 'suggestions'.

Everyone lies, and everyone lies about sex. Some lie less than others, and some do not commit major lies against a spouse.

30% of children born into a marriage, are not fathered by the husband. It's kind of a big problem.

DK

30% was confirmed by a blood study of 30,000 that was done not to determine paternatity, but the study required confirmation of true parentage. The researchers were shocked.
