Post-Katrina plague

the trial lawyers. The city is awash with writ-writing attorneys -- most from Louisiana but some nationally recognizable -- looking to profit from the misery inflicted by nature. Already, they have filed class-action lawsuits against the oil and natural gas industry, insurance companies and governments. More suits are coming, with possible defendants including relief agencies such as the American Red Cross. ("Thanks for your help. See you in court.")

The lure is the "prospect of big settlements," The Baltimore Sun reports. Among the more lecherous litigators is Joseph Larre. He normally handles criminal cases, but his 300 clients were evacuated after Katrina and are cooling their heels in lockups as far away as Jacksonville, Fla. With his practice idled, he's decided to give trial lawyering a go.

Attorney Larre didn't know whom he would sue or for what, and he had no clients. So he nailed signs to utility poles all over the city announcing "Katrina class action lawsuits" and his phone number. Within days, he had lined up 300 clients eager to play the judicial lottery and chase their dream of free money from out-of-court settlements, minus Attorney Larre's one-third share and expenses.

"You really hit the jackpot if you nail the (U.S.) Army Corps of Engineers," he mused. Attorney Larre's ad campaign has inspired other trial lawyers to post signs around New Orleans and Louisiana. I guess these aren't your daddy's ambulance-chasers.

This guy could stand a 0.357 magnum slug between the eyes. He could be the poster child for the unscrupulous, greedy lawyer category.

I wonder if he realizes that money will be coming out of his pocket too?

There's a lot of greed in the people begging us for money to help while sueing others for more of the same money. LA is a disgusting rat hole.

I wonder if he realizes that money will be coming out of his pocket too?

At a much smaller rate than he's taking it in.

"First, kill all the lawyers."

I'm surprised John Edwards is missing out on the potential gravy train...

Class action suit about a hurricane? Good luck suing the government over an Act of God. He could sue God -- but good luck getting Service of Process.

I suppose he could publish -- but what newspaper would God read?
