Palmeiro: B12 shot may have caused positive test

WASHINGTON -- Rafael Palmeiro gave his first public explanation of his failed drug test Wednesday, on the eve of a congressional report on whether the former Baltimore Orioles slugger lied under oath when he denied using steroids.

In a statement released by his lawyer, Palmeiro acknowledged several facts of his case that already had been reported, including that the anabolic steroid stanozolol was found in his system in May, and that he had raised the possibility that a shot of vitamin B12 he took in April "might have been the cause."

"I have never intentionally taken steroids," Palmeiro said in the statement.

When he testified before the House Government Reform Committee on March 17, alongside Mark McGwire, Jose Canseco and others, Palmeiro jabbed a finger in the air and said: "I have never used steroids. Period." On Aug. 1, baseball suspended Palmeiro for 10 days after he tested positive for steroids.

Two days later, Government Reform Committee chairman Tom Davis, R-Va., said the panel would open an investigation into whether Palmeiro committed perjury. A report on that investigation will be released Thursday, and Davis spokesman Dave Marin wouldn't comment Wednesday on the report's contents or Palmeiro's statement.

Major League Baseball executive vice president Rob Manfred declined comment.

This guy must think everyone out in the world is stupid.

Vitamin B12 is much much different than the STEROID that was found in his system (stanozolol).

What a complete crock.

For your Baseball pinglist....

FYI, Congress is looking to slap the MLB (and by extension the NFL, NHL and NBA) with stern penalties since they all seem to not be able to get their thumbs out.

Here's what I don't understand. He knows that he is being tested. He knows that he is talking before a Senate panel. If he's juicing then why not just take the 5th? The truth is going to come out anyway but at least he's not going to perjure himself. Is it possible that someone did slip him something as it seems like an exercise in stupidity to do roids with that type of scrutiny over him.

????

Wasn't there a Seinfeld episode where Elane ate poppy seeds that gave her a positive heroine test?

That's what I don't understand.

I never took Palmeiro as an arrogant guy but maybe he thought he could get away with it?

Maybe that also explains what he is saying now.

No way in heck a B12 vitamin shot comes up as an anabolic steroid or even a corticosteroid....

I suppose there is an outside chance he could have acquired the drug through other means.

I recently had to use an ointment on my eyelids for an eye infection. The Dr. cautioned me against using it for more than 10 days, as it contains a steriod.

yeah.

I don't want Congress involved, but since Congress granted the MLB their anti-trust agreement, I guess they have something simliar to a right if they want it.

I would have figured that the leagues themselves would have been smart enough to get it right, but apparently not.

yeah, but if that was the case, why lie now?

Why say B12? I mean that is about the most innoucuous thing he COULD have taken...

i really dont care if palmeiro was juicing, thats something baseball should take care of by itself....congress has MORE IMPORTANT things to do than have hearings about steroids in baseball.

Why should congress fine anyone?

It's not that they will fine them, but, especially since Baseball as an anti-trust agreement with Congress, they don't want to lose that (even though they shouldn't have it in the first place, but that's another day)....
