WHITE SETTLEMENT, Texas -- Residents held on to their heritage Tuesday night and voted against changing their town name to West Settlement, despite proponents' arguments that the name has racial connotations.
In a record turnout, 2,388 residents voted against the name change and 219 voted for it in unofficial, complete returns.
The city got its name because it was the lone village of white pioneers amid several American Indian encampments in the Fort Worth area in the Texas Republic territory in the 1840s.
Mayor James Ouzts and other city leaders proposed the change, saying the current name is confusing, misleading and has hindered economic development in this 15,000-resident suburb of Fort Worth.
However, the ballot measure angered many residents who said the change was unnecessary and too costly. Signs across town urged folks to "Be Proud! Don't Let Them Discard the Heritage of White Settlement. Vote No!"

I'm glad to see political correctness was beaten back some more in Texas. This wasn't even close 91.6% voted against the name change.

The Indians probably had other less savory names that never stuck...

Jay Leno made a joke about this on his show last night. He said the proposal was to change the name to "Crakerville". I thought that was a pretty funny joke actually.
I'm glad the voters rejected it so overwhelmingly.

PC takes a hit.
If given the opportunity, most times, PC would take the hit.
Whoever raised the name-change issue is probably more suited to live in the Ninth Circuit area. What's the Pledge of Allegiance guy been doing lately?

This would be as bad as trying to change the name of Big Assawoman Bay.

Now it's time to change the Mayor and other city leaders. It actually makes a pretty good slogan.

Well, the American way is if you lose at the ballot box, you find some judge to order things done your way (cf. Al Gore and the 2000 election).
There's a whole slew of other racist names which need adjustment: White Rock Lake, White Sands, White Sulfur Springs, Whitehorse...
To: Paleo Conservative
I bet the 219 don't really live there.

I'm temporarily relocated in White Settlement due to Hurricane Katrina. I'm really impressed with the people of Fort Worth. In general they are a lot smarter and so much more decent than so many liberal, lazy, greedy, politically correct Democratic people in New Orleans.
Eventually I will have to return to Louisiana, but hope one day I can come back to Fort Worth. I'm really spoiled here now by all the common sense.
