Hey, Reagan was great. He stood up to the Soviets, won the cold war, freed 700 million people, revolutionized economic thinking, got respect (maybe not loved) all over the globe, and was able to inspire, motivate, invigorate and instill us all with a sense of optimism.

Now, I like Bush and I think he will bounce back. Incidentally, I worked night and day for the guy to get him elected twice. I think he is an honest, decent and courageous man. He has taken the fight to the enemy Democrats in every election. However, I don't know whether it is him or his advisers but they have been off their game as of late.

I think he has got his sea legs back and we need to start fighting back and answering our adversaries when they make repeated unchallenged statements like: Bush lied, people died.

Well, remember that 1972, 1980, 1984, and 1988 were Republican landslides...and after all Nixon and Reagan were from CA.

One very interesting point that seems to have been overlooked: In one of the districts (36) with a very liberal population, the incumbent Democrat (Plum) ran without any Republican opposition. The only opposing candidate was a Libertarian (Ferguson) who received 21% of the vote. If you look at other races in the area, 3d party candidates are lucky to get 2%.

This tells me that voters are not so thrilled with the Democrats, either. The Washington Post, of course, has a headline reading, "Backlash against GOP hit hard in Northern Virginia". I think the backlash was against the poor gubernatorial candidate (and campaign) that the Repubs chose to run.

Nobody outside of NY even cares what he calls himself.

Only in NY & NYC would he even be a RINO, let alone a republican.

But hey, all you RINO voting NYers, you just keep paying those bills for all those Socialist programs.

Me, I'll stay here and pay zero income tax, keep my homestead exemption, and drive on beautiful roads. - What was a "pothole" again?

In an AP story about the dem victories last night this quote, along with one sentence about Bloomberg's victory, was at the end of the article. The MSM will attack Bush all day today saying:

1) This was a referendum on his presidency

2) The dems are now poised to take back the House and Senate in 06.

But of course the AP's own polling says that the President was NOT a factor (see below). Pathetic.

"Most voters said President Bush was not a factor in their choices Tuesday, according to the survey conducted Tuesday by the AP and its polling partner, Ipsos. The survey was based on interviews with 1,280 adults throughout New Jersey who said they voted in the governor's election."

One thing that remains mysterious to me; Kaine very plainly and out in the open ran on the fact that he helped and supported Warner in raising taxes last year. This is not something he tried to hide or gloss over. Warner even did an ad that essentially said, "I couldn't have raised taxes last year without Tim Kaine's help." And yet he ended up easily beating Kilgore.

Why?

Republicans lost nothing and gained nothing, yes, but we lost an opportunity. VA is the only state that forbids incument governors from running again. So we get to try again in 2009, and let's hope there is a serious candidate that year. Who knows, maybe Mark Warner will decide he wants to return to the governorship, and the 2009 GOP campaign will again likely falter.

"Why?"

A lot of people are addicted to the government subsidizing their livelihoods. Why vote for limited government if that same government will "provide" everything for you?

It could hurt Allen a bit in Virginia, until he can shake off being "connected" to a person who ran as bad a campaign as Kilgore did.

I also think it hurts BUSH a bit having come out for Kilgore.

Kilgore was a lousy candidate. Just to give one trivial but telling example: On Monday, Sean Hannity was trying to help these races by giving free air time to Forrester and Kilgore. Forrester showed up, but it didn't help him (not surprising in New Jersey, given that the conservatives were talking about sitting out).

Kilgore was supposed to be on, but ended up with a "scheduling conflict", so he rescheduled for TUESDAY AFTERNOON.

What could keep the campaign from having 5 minutes for a radio show that reaches a few hundred thousand of your base in the state?

Other Kilgore sins:
1) Hitler.
2) Running an ad attacking lawyers for their clients. Republicans don't believe lawyers should be punished for doing their job.
3) Ignoring the Virginia Civilian Defense League (VCDL) questionare, and then calling their leader a nutcase.
4) Refusing to answer a question about whether he would sign a bill banning abortion.
5) Being for unelected regional committees putting local tax increases on a referenbum.
6) Not saying anything about the 2 billion dollar SURPLUS, and not having a plan to return it to the people by funding the car tax phaseout.
7) Failing to run positive ads tellng everybody what he would do. I was at the polls and most people had no idea what Kilgore was for -- But they all knew about the Hitler ad.

Look: The conservative Republican candidates for LGov and AG won, each getting 70,000+ MORE votes than Kilgore. We had enough republicans show up to win the election, but way too many of them actually voted for Kaine.

It doesn't do much good getting your base out when they vote for the other guy.

The rest of the virginia election was scary, but not too bad. We lost one good conservative. We bumped several RINOs out in the primary, but then couldn't get their replacements elected. We'll see how that works in 2 years, if we can get republicans to win back those seats.

My delegate won, and my district voted for Kilgore. I did the best I could do.

I don't have blinders on, jla..........which is why I found your graphic silly.

I see things as they are, the good and the bad. If you choose to see only bad, and call it 'conservatism' more power to you.

I'd rather make gains than end up with nothing at all.........which is where you're going to end up in the long run........with nothing.

Can someone explain to me why the MSM writes that Dems replacing Dems is a referendum on Bush? Sounds more like a referendum on Dems.

True, it probably hurt him a little but to the extent the kooks beleive nor larry sabato claims. Its just a minor bump in the road that nobody will remember come primary time. Warner on the other hand will thump his chest about this come primary time since it'll give him an edge over Hillary. Of course Mccain went out stumping for prop 77 here in california and that went down in flames and i don't see anybody saying he's hurt ;).

I know Reagan was great. And that's why I'm getting more and more irritated with people who use him to bash President Bush.

Every supporter of George W. Bush who was politically involved in the '80's is a huge supporter of Ronald Reagan. He did great things, and he compromised in some areas where we would rather that he not. That's the way things work in politics. Bush is doing the same thing, and in the end, he will have done great things for the world, and for conservatism.

Just for the record.......I don't think he ever lost his 'sea legs.' That's what the media and the left would like us to think, but he's been steady, and doing his job from Day 1.

He doesn't use bogus poll numbers to evaluate his success, and neither should we.

I agree. The first nail in the coffin of the republican party in my opinion. They have been a self-inflected wound. They got power and promptly did not know what to do with it. Whether those here agree or not, I really don't care as I have my opinion and you have yours, but in my opinion, in speaking with other conservatives and listening to them talk, they are upset with the lack of control, the lack of doing, on part of the RINOcrats, republicans and President Bush. Whether you like it or not, I am sure that there were lots of conservatives that voted for this stupid dem in Virginia. It is a sign of what is going to happen. If they lost here, they lose the mid-term elections, then you can kiss the congress and white house goodbye. The socialists will get elected and control all three. That is my greatest fear for the republic. I sincerely hope I am wrong, but I just believe this is a sign of what is coming. The Francesization of the USA.

I find it hard to imagine you find cheaper gas in Maryland. The Maryland gas tax is much higher than Virginia.

Maybe you just live in an area with high localized gas prices. Out here in PWcounty I just paid $2.12.

If Bloomberg WERE a REAL republican, it might not matter, however, he is a LIBERAL with a capital L, so no different from a socialist democrat. I read where one guy who has never voted republican voted for Bloomberg, and said, "doesn't matter, he is not really a republican anyway." So, even democrats see Bloomberg as one of their own.

You are right. The bashing of Bush went on far too long. Hopefully everyoone is on board. We have a mess on our hands right now and Bush is really the only one who is capable to meeting the challenge.

Bush has done incredible things: Kept his promises on tax cuts, made stunning progress on tort reform when nobody thought that was possible, took back the Senate for us by taking on the likes of former (love that word) Senator Tom Daschle in his home state, takes abuse daily from idiot European and South American leaders (Socialists), the MSM, the opposition DemocRats and sadly members from his own party.

However, the man prevails, does not get bitter or angry and daily goes about conducting the War on Terrorism and protects the National Security of the United States and much of the world. He is amazing. And we need to support him and let him become the greatest President of all time.

I am not being flippant. If he succeeds in Iraq and on the War on Terrorism we will remember him in Rooseveltian, Reaganesque and Lincolnesque terms.

Well stated and thanks for posting. GLTY.
