Nice ads, but are they a prelude to separation? The other Iraq? Fall in love with a warm message then we're hook to feel for them when they separate. I hope not but makes me wonder.

Nope nope - I just posted the explanation to hslaw about what "The Other Iraq" means. The Kurds view themselves as the model for the nation. They think that the system of democracy, free markets, etc... that they have built and are building can be a pathway for the entire nation. Remember the Iraqi PM (Talabani) is a Kurd!

I'll stick with the other explanation, the "other" Iraq is all of Iraq that is working and gaining ground, and not making headlines in the west.

In order to be a prelude to separation the Kurds would have to anticipate civil war in both Iraq and Turkey - they are not likely to be considering anything of the sort. At least not unless a decade or so of relative democracy fails to bring the rest of the region up to standards they have established during the previous decade or so.

It's kind of up to the rest of Iraq to take advantage of an established model (other than Israel) and up to turkey to avoid acting like Saddam in its own Kurdish regions.

I feel for them. I have always felt for them, much like those plucky Lebanese who rose up and kicked the Syrians out: Image hosted by Photobucket.com

They'd like to be their own country, but if that's not possible, to at least have decent proportional representation in a united Iraq.
