MIAMI -- The crew of a luxury cruise ship used a sonic weapon that blasts earsplitting noise in a directed beam while being attacked by a gang of pirates off the eastern coast of Africa, the cruise line says.

The Seabourn Spirit had a Long Range Acoustic Device, or LRAD, installed as a part of its defense systems, said Bruce Good, a spokesman for Miami-based Seabourn Cruise Line. The Spirit was about 100 miles off the coast of Somalia when pirates fired rocket-propelled grenades and machine guns as they tried to get onboard.

Cruise ships with 50 calibers on each side would probably keep pirates at least three miles away. HUH? WHAT?

ROFL, exactly, when I went on a cruise we shot skeet with 12 gauges, would love to see 50 calibers mounted and be able to shoot terrorists - what a great cruise that would be, maybe we should contact Princess Cruise lines to set it up...lol...

My favorite are the Reeses' and the Snickers.

Hmmm... two RPG's in the hull; doesn't sound like it was all that effective.

I recommend medium caliber persuasion methods next time.

Sonic Blasts are so filling, the pirates had to lie down and take a nap. At which point the liner made a hasty retreat.

I would like to see TOW missiles installed in the cruise liners and used on these vermin. A 50 cal might chew up the terrorists' boat, but a good, solid hit with a TOW would take care of the boat and the vermin with one big bang.

Naaah. Give the cruise line some TOW missiles and sink the pirate's craft.

"When they attacked, we had no choice left, so we broke out the EthelMermenizer..."

"When she hit that 'Everything's coming up roses' line, their boat broke in two and they sank with all hands. Maybe it is overkill, but we have passengers to protect."

But seriously, that LRAD sounds like a pretty cool device. I hear they are using them for crowd control, also. I am waiting for a smaller hand-held version to use on stupid people or to train cats that claw curtains.

I believe that the Constitution still allows for privateers.

It would be a whole new level of (Name your favorite Sport here) Camp.

You fly to Cyprus and after a few days of target practice, seamanship and RADAR training head with you fellow camper shipmates for an exciting operation off the coast of Somalia. There you will spend a sun and fun filled week of nightly cruises starting just off the coast and heading out to sea to intercept returning Pirates.

Your memories will last a lifetime. All the plunder you can recover is yours to keep!

That is funny. My husband shot skeet on a cruise we went on once and he'd be more than happy to shoot a terrorist.

The Somali coast has actually been well known as an area infested by pirates for some years now. All shipping is advised to keep well away from the coastline. There are many reported incidents, usually with the crews being held for ransom. The MO seen here is typical. The Indonesian coast is even worse.

'Course the attacking of a cruise ship is a first for them, but attacks on large freighters and tankers are routine.
