Bill Could Ban Smoking In Car With Kids
Studies Show Secondhand Smoke Impairs Respiratory Health
POSTED: 11:14 am EST November 8, 2005
LANSING, Mich. -- Smoky car rides to school may soon be illegal.
Using a lit tobacco product in a vehicle with a person under 18 would be a civil infraction under a bill to be formally introduced Tuesday by Rep. John Moolenaar, spokesman John Whetstone said.
"We've all seen it on our streets and highways, children in the back seat, smokers in the front, and your heart just goes out to those kids," said Moolenaar, R-Midland.
The bill would allow police officers to pull over drivers who are smoking with children in the car, Whetstone said. A fine for the infraction would be set by the courts.
Several studies indicate that secondhand smoke causes lung cancer in adult nonsmokers and impairs the respiratory health of children.
An estimated 150,000 to 300,000 children under 18 months of age get pneumonia or bronchitis every year from breathing secondhand tobacco smoke, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
I blame years of smoke...not my parents.
Thanks, I didn't know that. A shame really. Although a bit of a kook, she's right about 70% of the time. Forcefully right.
Apparently, that stance has been modified somewhat. I did a keyword search on clairewolfe and a title search on Wolfe and turned up quite a few hits.
For those who may have been offended, I offer the following substitutes in the same vein:
"The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants." -- Thomas Jefferson
The kind of man who wants the government to adopt and enforce his ideas is always the kind of man whose ideas are idiotic. H.L. Mencken
Yeah, and that scumbag you got for Guv is a SUPER-leftist, as you obviousl already know. He wisely kept it in check & hid that fact to get in office, but-look out now. I'd be more than willing to bet that a statewide smoker ban will be very high on his agenda. Not that that would be easy for him to get through in your state.
Well, they usually are caused by a bacterial or viral infection, but the condition itself is inflammation which can be caused by a lot of things, e.g. chemicals:
Chemical pneumonia is an unusual type of lung irritation. Pneumonia usually is caused by a bacteria or virus. In chemical pneumonia, inflammation of lung tissue is from poisons or toxins. Only a small percentage of pneumonias are caused by chemicals.
* Many substances can cause chemical pneumonia, including liquids, gases, and small particles, such as dust or fumes, also called particulate matter. Some chemicals only harm the lungs; however, some toxic materials affect other organs in addition to the lungs and can result in serious organ damage or death.

I wish you were right - the statewide smoker ban proposed last legislative session was sponsored by a Republican.
It was also defeated 2 to 1..........
We're gearing up for a possible fight come January. Our biggest problem is that we have to fight Philip Morris. They claim they are remaining neutral, yet are actively supporting any effort from the antis as long as they know they can get votes for their issues, all of which screw the smokers.
I can understand brand loyalty, up to a certain extent. When the brand you are loyal to is the one helping the government screw you, it is time to find another brand.
PM is not a brand smokers should be buying.
With that said, I'm calling it a night - it's late, I was up early this morning, and have to be up even earlier tomorrow morning.
Have a good one........WBB in the am :)
Ummm...leave off the Jefferson quote as well. It's much overused and not used wisely here. But the Mencken one's a beaut! :-)
By the way-you'd better get the word out-to FREEP THIS POLL!!!

You really are just looking for a flame war and nothing else. Sorry, pet, you'll have to do better than that, to get one.
Heeeeeeeeeeeeeey...I was playing with you! ;-) (never said I was *good* at it! lol!)
LOL!
Oh! Thanks for the giggle/ping! I didn't know this thread was still going! (A fact that I find that I'm really excited about and that's a really sad thing because it means that I was thinking about this thread that I read last night all darn day and that means that I really *do* have no life and now I get to catch up with the stupid conversation that I had to leave last night- not because I had to go to bed or go do something important, but because everybody else had to go to bed so they could get up early and do something important, because they all have lives...)
Why would anyone be so inconsiderate as to smoke with kids in the car to begin with? That would have to be one self centered irresponsible person IMO.
Ah, if it isn't the clown from CA, where it all started. Well, I was wondering how long it would be before you showed up. You're drawn to smoker threads like a moth to a flame. The next logical step to this will be smoking in your own home if you have children....which will lead, in turn, to charges of child abuse. Which will make those of your ilk very happy. I've oftimes wondered why people like you ever join FR in the first place, since you're closet socialists.
By the way....I suppose you noticed how channel 4 phrased the question, didn't you? For voting no, I mean. "No-it infringes on smoker's rights." The bastards know full well that due to 15 years of their (the media) brainwashing that smokers are despised more than Osama Bin Laden-therefore, we have no rights to the public-at-large. Think I'm being overly cynical here? Well-it didn't say-"No-it infringes on PEOPLE'S rights, now did it? (because if you say 'smoker', they're not seen as people, and have no rights) Bet the results would be different then. It's all in the wording.
The horror. Parents feeding their children that crap. It ought to be a crime. ;-)
Why smoke in cars with children?
That is irresponsible.
