Bill Could Ban Smoking In Car With Kids

Studies Show Secondhand Smoke Impairs Respiratory Health

POSTED: 11:14 am EST November 8, 2005

LANSING, Mich. -- Smoky car rides to school may soon be illegal.

Using a lit tobacco product in a vehicle with a person under 18 would be a civil infraction under a bill to be formally introduced Tuesday by Rep. John Moolenaar, spokesman John Whetstone said.

"We've all seen it on our streets and highways, children in the back seat, smokers in the front, and your heart just goes out to those kids," said Moolenaar, R-Midland.

The bill would allow police officers to pull over drivers who are smoking with children in the car, Whetstone said. A fine for the infraction would be set by the courts.

Several studies indicate that secondhand smoke causes lung cancer in adult nonsmokers and impairs the respiratory health of children.

An estimated 150,000 to 300,000 children under 18 months of age get pneumonia or bronchitis every year from breathing secondhand tobacco smoke, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

"I'm a conservative living in Virginia and a liberal was just elected Governor - not a good day............."

I heard that on the news this morning. I am very sorry for your loss. It could be worse, you could have Kwame for another 4 years.

I would like to be able to see how many of these asthma cases are actually hyperventilation due to a lack of coping skills.

I live in Illinois and am starting to look for a low tax state, with better weather and fewer liberals.
Texas, New Mexico, Okla homa, South Carolina are a few that I am looking at.

Good gawdamighty!!!! My mama, daddy, grandparents, aunts and uncles ALL smoked in the cars when we were little ( I am now over half a hundred) and they all were either chain smokers or busy building their chains. I don't have ANY kind of health problem from it. No lung/allergy/ etc problems. Weight doesn't count. I don't smoke and never have - not counting the one I had when I was 19 and drunk on my butt. I just KNOW it was the ciggy that made me puke my guts out and not the Jack Daniels.

What I find amazing is that you are assuming your asthma is your parents fault. There are hundreds of thousands of people with asthma whose parents don't smoke. Why are you so quick to pin it on your mom and dad?

And, tootsie, some of us have never been banned nor had to change our nics. ;^)

Yep, and I would be one of them. Never banned nor even suspended for a day. Can you say the same? I didn't think so.

I don't "feel guilty" about smoking. Do you?

Never have been a smoker. But I would take a puff (risking my life) for liberty.

In a state where corruption abounds, laws must be very numerous.

This quote seems to be very apt, because I'm learning to be very leery when a pol says "we need a comprehensive solution to this problem" because I suspect that simply means more programs to hide pork in. Like with illegaks, I would rather see narrowly focused bills, like a single bill to build the fence, or appropriation for beds, than a big porker that promises to do it all.

Sounds like total BS to me as well, but here's the "source" for you to look at...

Thank you. My problem is the range. 150,000 to 300,000? They can't narrow it down? They must be making it up.

Here's an even worse one from the source you provided: increases in the number of asthma attacks and severity of symptoms in 200,000 to 1 million children with asthma

If they'd said "We've got 500,000 documented cases", I'd be more likely to fall for it. They admit on this page that they're estimating. With that kind of range, they've got to be guessing or inventing.

Smoke and mirrors. It is a game of CYA to justify their existence and the bogus science behing the anti-smoker propaganda
