Bill Could Ban Smoking In Car With Kids
Studies Show Secondhand Smoke Impairs Respiratory Health
POSTED: 11:14 am EST November 8, 2005
LANSING, Mich. -- Smoky car rides to school may soon be illegal.
Using a lit tobacco product in a vehicle with a person under 18 would be a civil infraction under a bill to be formally introduced Tuesday by Rep. John Moolenaar, spokesman John Whetstone said.
"We've all seen it on our streets and highways, children in the back seat, smokers in the front, and your heart just goes out to those kids," said Moolenaar, R-Midland.
The bill would allow police officers to pull over drivers who are smoking with children in the car, Whetstone said. A fine for the infraction would be set by the courts.
Several studies indicate that secondhand smoke causes lung cancer in adult nonsmokers and impairs the respiratory health of children.
An estimated 150,000 to 300,000 children under 18 months of age get pneumonia or bronchitis every year from breathing secondhand tobacco smoke, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
My old man did both, regularly, and I turned out OK, by most accounts.
I like mud :)
I thought moving away from Delaware would gt me away from the liberals.........but last night's election results proved me to be wrong, SIGH.
You're right - this topic was long ago exhausted, unfortunately the ban-addicts haven't figured that out and so we must continue.
I hear you.
Thanks for the ping. These MI RINOs disgust me!
I would never even think about smoking in front of a small child unless I offered him or her one first. ;)
Of course it will be disputed, everyone knows that smoking causes EVERY disease known to mankind /sarc
"This is so obvious as to be beyond debate among civilized people."
Do you support government legislation to support the position you espouse? If so, please define the difference between "civilized people" and "enlightened people." Keep in mind the use of government force being used to push the agenda of the enlightened.
You are correct, they are pro-choice on everything from abortion to gay adoption...........but when it comes to tobacco use by adults, they are the total opposite.
Hypocrites.
"Good parents do not force their children to breathe smoke."
Please provide to us your full definition of "good parents." That way we will be able to provide to our legislatures a road map to further actions.
(The power of the State to do good is the power of the State to do evil.)
"Eight Illinoisans DIE of secondhand smoke every day."
Name one.
This LINK has numerous links for articles and information about the study.
Mind you, I am in no way advocating anyone take up the habit, just pointing out that the hysteria of the antis is mostly just smoke and mirrors, and a lot of hot air.
Excellent points. Our parents and grandparents didn't need the government to dictate how they raised their children, why is it any different now?
"A simple question, why does anyone with a job still live in Michigan?"
I am looking to leave very soon. You have any ideas?
Growing up, most of the adults in my life smoked, and they have yet to link chicken pox, the mumps, or scarlet fever to SHS exposure. Other than those childhood diseases my brother and I were rarely if ever sick.
OTOH, I have a niece that was never exposed to SHS and had chronic respiratory and ear infections growing up, she was also a rabid anti-smoker, until she got into her 20s and realized the pack of lies she had been fed by the fanatics.
ALL Rinos disgust me.
Well...I know that my parents would never do anything on purpose to harm their kids.....they gave up ALOT for us kids. You seem to have a big guilt trip about something and are trying to take it out on me somehow.
Thanks...this was all I was looking for.
I agree....the government should just give us the facts and let us decide.....
