RAPID CITY Police responded to an accidental shooting Saturday at Rapid City Regional Airport when a gun was fired near the baggage check-in counter. No one was injured, and no charges are being filed.
A retired Philadelphia police officer was here on a hunting trip and was checking his luggage when the airline people advised him he had to place his Glock 9 mm handgun into a hard case, Sgt. Elias Diaz of the Rapid City Police Department said Sunday.
He was unloading it and disassembling the weapon, and he removed the magazine, Diaz said. Part of disassembling a Glock is that after clearing it by removing the rounds, you need to pull the trigger. He pulled the trigger and had not adequately cleared the chamber.
Diaz said a Glock, unlike most handguns, will fire without a magazine if there is still a bullet in the chamber.
The bullet passed through the mans suitcase, dented the scale platform where bags are weighed and ricocheted into a nearby electronic machine.
Nobody was hurt just a little nervous, Diaz said.
No charges???? Oh, that's right. He's still an elite and not a serf. A regular serf would be in jail now.
Remember, only trained law enforcement personnel should be allowed to handle firearms.
Uh... This is a unique Glock feature?
It might make sense to have this type of activity done in a separate room away from throngs of people.
Oh yeah. I forgot. There was one in the chamber. What an idiot.
One of the safety features of the Glock Pistols is that they will only fire when a round is in the chamber. (I have a remarkable grasp of the obvious.)
What would the charge be? Last time I checked it was legal to be an idiot
Don't try this at home, you (or I) would draw hard time.
Dear Ignorant Reporter: Almost all semi-autos made before 1990 will fire with the magazine removed.
You're not allowed to bring a handgun on a plane by federal law.
So if you're bringing your firearm, you have to put it in a hardcase and check it.
You can't have a firearm on your person or in a carry-on.
This guy should have known all that beforehand and brought his weapon in a hardcase.
Apparently he thought that because he used to have a badge, he was entitled to saunter onto an airplane with his sidearm in a holster.
If you or I ever tried to walk through an airport checkpoint with a loaded firearm at our side, we would be in prison.
Never figured out how to accidentally fire a pistol. You are just plain stupid and careless if it happens, and should not be permitted to EVER carry a firearm again.
Reckless endangerment? Breach of the peace?
He's very lucky. Dumb, but lucky. Imagine the law suite if he had shot or killed someone.
OK Freeper gun wise people, what other semi's will NOT fire with the magazine removed? Something to consider and think about before your (or my) next handgun purchase.
After trying many different handguns, my electrician chose a Beretta because of the way it "felt" and fired. Did he make a good choice? He's licensed to carry and carries it on jobs, because he does a lot of night work on businesses (restaurants, after hours) and another electrician was shot to death by a couple of burglars stealing a safe at a major restaurant here.
Terrorism. 100 counts of attempted murder, with enhancements for the federal agents anywhere in the vicinity. Gross negligence, attempted hijacking ...
Walk into an airport carrying a loaded concealed handgun then report back to me on the charges.
Well, that's why you rack the action a couple-three times, then take a look (not down the barrel, of course). A "thought-to-be-empty" firearm is a very different thing from a "known to be empty" one. There are damned few gun "accidents" - the vast majority of mishaps are the direct result of ignorance, carelessness, and/or sheer stupidity, generally in some combination.
It might make sense to have this type of activity done in a separate room away from throngs of people.
hunting with a glock?:)
