Good Rifle For Auto Defense? (Vanity)
11/08/05 | JoeGar

I have a SIGARMS P239 .357 SIG for concealed carry and inside-the-home defense, but I feel I need a good rifle for neighborhood defense outside -- just in case somebody wants to torch some cars. I'd love an M1 Garand -- just to hear the ka-ching when the clip ejects -- but it's too expensive. The Ruger Mini Thirty looks interesting. What are your suggestions?

Are you sniping or trench clearing?

30-06 with a scope for the single molitov slinger...and just about any 12 gauge shotgun for trench clearing....or street clearing....

Just the sound of a pump shotgun rack will move the little darlings down the street....

All this armchair bravado amuses me. You think that if the USA had riots like France, that you could just sit on your front porch with a rifle and hold them at bay? You've watched too many westerns. In real life, this will result in a mob torching your house and torturing/killing your family and I don't care how many bullets you have stockpiled. They won't be enough. Let's hope that it doesn't come down to shooting looters in our backyard. For if it comes to that, all is lost.

You sir, are not a student of history. During the Rodney King riots the only shopkeepers to save their businesses were the Vietnamese with M-16's locked and loaded. Rioters are basically chickenshit herd animals no different than stampeding cattle. You shoot the lead bull, and they move on to easier pickin's. I clearly remember the scene of Vietnamese standing together to protect property and lives. Cops wouldn't even go into the "hood", but neighbors banned together in armed militia stopped that crap. The exact same scenario played out in small towns all over the Katrina disaster area. Do you know why you only saw looting in Nawlins? They don't call Louisiana the sportsman's paradise for nothing. EVERYONE HAS GUNS. In Poplarville Miss. the citizens organized armed neighborhood watches and lost no homes to the looters. They did move into town, but went around after shotgun blasts across the open field said "Looters Not Welcome".

"in real life"? In real life mobs generally break when members begin falling, shot. You ever stand up to a mob or a gang? I have. They're cowards. If i had a choice to be a member of an attacking mob or one of these "amusing" people on the porch, I'd choose the porch.

"..I feel I need a good rifle for neighborhood defense."

You only need a .30-06 if your neighborhood stretches across the valleys of the Rocky Mtns. I would suggest a Marlin or Winchester lever action in .30-30. It is light, handy and lethal to 150 yards.

I'm like you, Sam, I figure on using firearms as a last resort, like if someone were breaking in our house during the night while we were in it, or piracy at sea, etc.

But I'd point out that the Koreans in LA proved that firearms can command respect from rioting crowds, IIRC.

Also, in the devastation of hurricane Andrew, when there were no phones at all, all roads were impassable, entire neighborhoods were isolated and out of communication, and you couldn't call authority for help, and they couldn't have gotten to you if you could have, it felt good to be well armed. People who have grown up in a rural area also know that help can be a distance away.

And police make no claim to possess the ability of preventing crime.

Being armed is a reasonable choice. I'm not sure I could say the same about the reverse.

My wife has the 870 to back me up and pickup any 'leakers'.

and with a rifled barrel and the excellent sabot rounds available, your wife, with the 870, can assist you with some of the long range shooting.

Sadly it happened for three days in Crown Heights NY under Mayor Dinkins.

I'd like to throw in a personal question as well for the firearm experts on FR.

I own an old PWA, Pac Western Arms AR-15. It shoots well, and is accurate, IMO. However, since the company is defunct, I believe, I'm wondering about trading it in on something more current, perhaps a Bushmaster, or maybe even an entirely different configuration.

Any comments or advice, I'd appreciate. Thanks.

Just curious. My father in law passed and I became the owner of his Model 94, .32 caliber. Do they still make amo for that model ??

Be carefull, if it says .32 caliber on the barrel it takes .32WCF (Winchester Center Fire) ammo, not 30-30. And yes, you can still get ammo for it.

I've got an older Mini 14 that I use mostly for a boat gun. I like the thing and consider it to be fairly accurate, though I've often heard that the newer ones are not known for that.

OTOH, I like a riot configuration pump shotgun for home defense. A rifle does reach out more though, which is both good and bad.

I have a mini-14. I would not recommend either the mini-14 or the mini-30. I wouldn't handicap a BB gun with the horrendous sights on these guns. The rear sight on the mini-14 literally wobbles, and the rear sight on the mini-30 is prone to breakage.

I recently purchased an aftermarket rear sight for my mini-14, but the sight cannot be lowered enough to get the bullets withing 18" of the target. The original rear sight is so utterly worthless that I am now modifying the front sight to compensate for the aftermarket rear.

A friend also has a mini-14, and the original rear sight cannot be lowered enough to get within 6" of the target. He is watching what I do with my gun to decided on whether to modify his, or sell it to some unsuspecting sucker.

Best advice that I can give you: don't buy the mini-14 or the mini-30, unless you want some major headaches regarding getting the gun to actually hit the target.

"If you depend on the government to save you, you will be as disappointed as the whining NOLA crowd or the French citizens are this morning."

Exactly. Many who relied on government taking responsibility for much of their lives were completely lost when government dropped the ball.

I think that's pretty fair. The trick would be to buddy up with a few like minded friends for defense, if law and order went down the toilet. Four or five armed buddies, especially trained, would tilt the odds. Teach the wife and kids the finer points of squad assault, cover, and concealment. ;~>

Break down into fire teams. Two or three laying down a base of fire, while the other 2 or three flank.
