Good Rifle For Auto Defense? (Vanity)
11/08/05 | JoeGar

Posted on 11/08/2005 2:18:45 AM PST by JoeGar

I have a SIGARMS P239 .357 SIG for concealed carry and inside-the-home defense, but I feel I need a good rifle for neighborhood defense outside -- just in case somebody wants to torch some cars. I'd love an M1 Garand -- just to hear the ka-ching when the clip ejects -- but it's too expensive. The Ruger Mini Thirty looks interesting. What are your suggestions?

That's quite a leap from burning your car to graffiti. Here in Texas, if they are endangering you or someone else, stealing from you or destroying your property you have the right to protect with as much force as you want. Time and again apartment dwellers have been no-billed by grand juries for shooting people breaking into cars. Over by Dallas a guy came home to find a pickup backed up to his front door, he blocked his drive and as luck would have it he had his Marlin 444 with him when 3 guys come out carrying his stuff he yelled for them to stop and they broke and ran he layed 'em all down and saved the taxpayers a lot of money. The lawyers were all upset because they felt they had been cheated out of our money. What a concept, you are your own first line of self-defense.

What about an autoshottie? 0_o That would kickass. I wonder if you can get them in civilian models?

"On the other hand, if you don't have extra magazines, a 30-30 is faster to reload then an AR-15."

Anyone who has an AR-15 and no extra magazines is pretty stupid.

AK-47, cheap, reliable and not too many streets have lanes opened beyond 200 yards.

plus a lever gun wont scare the sheep near as bad. ;)

Unless you learn to twirl it when cocking, like Chuck Conners used to do. Uh oh, now I am dating myself.

Those who happen to live in the Democratik Republik of Maryland have to have a special permit to own an AR-15 type rifle... thanks to the Demo-Rat administrations.

Not even close to the truth. Where did you come up with that crap?

I like the AR-15 and the lever guns both.

If I were to be confronted by human wave attacks by massed Chinese, then obviously the AR would be the way to go.

In a typical breakdown in civilization either rural or urban, I don't think it would make a bit of difference. Having a 39-30 or better yet, a .44 mag lever gun with a pocket full of cartridges would probably be better than an AR. Those spare mags are nice but awkward to pack around.

Either one would be good.

really!? Mine hasnt been grossly inaccurate. Groups at 50-100 yards have been "decent" but not great. It's just that damn jamming problem that makes me hate the gun.

I didn't say grossly inaccurate but that isn't too far off the mark. I have owned several Mini-14's in various configurations. They are a lot of fun and are accurate enough for most uses. Also I don't recall ever having a jam with one.

Now I have never owned a Mini-30 but from talking to others it seems they behave pretty much just like the mini-14, that is reliable but not real accurate. I think a typical 100 yard group would be around 5-6 inches. Some would do better some not.

Rifle for auto defense? Horrible idea. Most states have a duty-to-retreat rule. If you are outside, and you attack a man who is threatening only damage to your property, you have no self-defense claim.

Armchair bravado makes for good bar room conversation, but in practice, it can get you locked away for 10 to 20 years.

If you find yourself in a dangerous situation with your automobile, don't shoot, drive away. It's your only legal option.

That about describes mine.

But Wolf ammo is CHEAP!

And popping off a few hundred rounds is good, clean, CHEAP fun.

Buying & Selling an AR-15 in Maryland: Since this is a site devoted to Maryland shooters I'll let you in the legalities in Maryland. In Mayland most AR-15 style rifles are considered 'regulated' weapons (like handguns). You must pay an extra $10 fee, and have the 8 day waiting period before you can pick up your rifle. You are also limited to one (1) Rifle (or Lower Receiver) in a 30 day period. This also prevents you from buying a handgun during this period, since you are limited to 1 'regulated weapon' per 30 day period (either a handgun or so-called 'assault weapon'). Private transfers of AR-15s are PROHIBITED - they must either go through an FFL (max fee he can charge is $20 per law) or you can go to the local State Police barracks and they can do the transfer. There is an EXCEPTION for Colt Sporter H-BAR Rifle; Eagle Arms EA-15 (probably due to differences with internal parts). These are treated just like any other rifle; private transfers are permitted, there is no waiting period, no limit to how many you can buy at a time, nor will it interfere with your purchase of a handgun. State Police consider any rifle with an HBAR barrel (like the Bushmaster) to be identical.

Close enough... A regulated weapon requiring waiting period and no "high capacity" magazines. The permit comment was made to me by an owner of several AR type rifles and a former MD FFL dealer. If he buffaloed me I guess I'm guilty of listening.

I agree but use a larger caliber like 30.06 or .308 they are ugly going in and out.

In real life, this will result in a mob torching your house and torturing/killing your family and I don't care how many bullets you have stockpiled.

That's why all those Korean shopkeepers were killed and had their places burned down for showing a weapon during the Rodney King riots?

Battle Rifles will most certainly stop rioting folks.

I just happen to have one. It also shoots some kind of dart but, I haven't found one yet. I just like it because they're pretty quite.

While Maryland is no panacea for gun owners, your info still isn't completely correct. The only AR's which require a waiting period are the complete rifles with a "government profile" barrel or a stripped lower receiver. Most AR's have the HBAR barrel (unlike what is stated in your quote) and are cash and carry.

As far as magazines go, 20-rounders are legal to purchase within Maryland, and if you go over the state border to purchase larger capacity mags, you can legally bring them back into the state and use them.

So dang it, go git yerself an AR!
